People Youve Been Before, as it proclaims on the cover is “not a memoir, ” And its not. In Twelve, Els as “Moe, ” is telling the story of the people who frequented “Today,” an ongoing meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous that he attends regularly, and sometimes leads.
Moe mostly plays the role of observer and judge of those who populate the story, Not so unusual in a firstperson narrative, when the subject matter of said narrative strays from “woe is me, ” Twelve is not strictly Moes story, Els claims “Twelve” is purely fiction, Like his exwife, not even the reader believes that,

We learn plenty about some of the individuals who attend Today, Especially those who have died by the time Twelve is finished, Two of those characters stand out, Tom, a friend from childhood, Viet Nam vet, and alcoholic, whose rough manuscript is eventually turned into the bestselling book by Els that gives his career as a novelist a major kickstart.
Burt, who leads the group at Today, is often revered as a savior by Moe through most of the narrative, and Burts fall from grace is both surprising and painful.


But “Twelve,” while it is a more interesting read for a number of reasons, is not the same story as People Youve Been Before.
By the end of the novel, our suspicions are confirmed, Els is prone to avoiding the truth about himself and his life, and he is called out for that time and again by his exwife, Racine De Lorr in Twelve, as their relationship crumbles to dust once again.


Although one moral of the story might be, “Never let your exwife read your workinprogress,” the book is ultimately about honesty and admitting ones lifelong efforts to avoid facing it.
Judging others, even lovingly, is easier than judging oneself truthfully,
I really enjoyed this book, Cleverly written, starting with the main character Els present life, while he is in the process of writing a fictional book which mirrors his past life.
I couldn't put the book down wanting to know the characters and identifying with them in my own life, It is a candid story about life, the people you meet, their ups and downs and you can't help but think about the persons you've also been before.
I would wholeheartedly recommend reading this book, "A story full of insight to the social feeling, antisocial behaviors, and internal torments of the alcoholic life, Told with humor, irony, and depth of feeling, " Not to be overlooked.
