on The Ranger (Highland Guard, #3)

enjoying but I'm not at the point where I'm loving this series so ,much that I basically devour all the book and can't get enough.
But don't get me wrong, I'm still enjoying it and I did enjoy this book more,

Maybe it's because I'm starting to get the hang of it but there are times when I still get confused with all the characters mentioned and how they tie into the storyline because every one is somehow connected to someone else! One person seems to be someone's brother, someone's daughter, someone's uncle or aunt, someone's enemy.
. . You get the point.

I love reading romance, And while I enjoyed reading this book and even liked the hero and heroine, I don't always like when the one of the main character's in the couple spends the entire book pushing the other away.
There were time where I was like 'this is it, they are finally going to fight for each other' but that time didn't come until the very end.
But considering the circumstances, I understand why their relationship was the way it was, Still, it doesn't mean I didn't wish the couple had gotten together a little earlier on,

Apparently the next book is awesome so I'm very excited to read it! This is a quiet little historydriven romance that is a departure from the more common character driven historical romances where a Scottish setting is more like window dressing for a frontandcenter relationship.
Here, the real story is the Highland Guardthink Navy SEALS meets kilts and swords, and Ranger's double life, Arthur "Ranger" Campbell spends most of the book fighting very hard against any attraction to Anna, and it's not until the/mark that the relationship starts to really develop in complexity.
While the first half of the book is dense and a bit slow, the last half of the book is really gripping as action picks up on all fronts and the stakes rise.
The history incorporated into this book is really impressive, With only.love scenes, the relationship is very cerebral, with lots of soul searching I wouldn't have minded a bit more heat, but the development felt true to the characters.
I'm looking forward to reading her backlist, Bir Monica kitabını daha yüzümde bir sırıtmayla bitirdim, Arthur beni bazen çileden çıkardı ama sondaki hareket müthişti, Hiç ilgimi çekmeyen Yılanın bile hikayesini deli gibi merak ediyorum bu kitaptan sonra, This was just one great enthralling adventure, Anna was so funny and fiesty and Arthur was the epitome of strong, silent hunkalicious manliness, In The Chief I had not really seen Arthur as being a hero that I would like a lot but I just loved him in this novel.
He may be quiet but there were hidden depths to this tortured soul, At the risk of sounding cliched, I must say that Arthur is a man who proves that still waters do indeed run deep.
This story of star crossed, forbidden love was very entertaining, Im so thoroughly enjoying this Highland “black ops” series that Monica McCarty has created, Shes taken actual events in history and integrated her idea of the elite and dangerous fighters needed during some of Scotlands blackest days, giving each hero a military or superhero “power” to make him a mean, lean fighting machine.
On top of that, Ms, McCarty has taken her stories to the next level, twisting the lives of the hero and heroine in such a way that the emotion is wrung out of you till theres nothing left.
Then theres only happiness all around,

We, of course, met Arthur Campbell in The Chief where he trains with those hand chosen by Robert the Bruce to be part of his new Highland Guard.
Arthurs special abilities are a sort of Spidey sense, able to detect danger and people and the like seemingly out of thin air, which has caused problems for him in the past with folks becoming suspicious when he does his thing.
Therefore, he spends a lot of time alone, its just easier that way, During the training, Arthur is tossed out of the Guard theres no tolerance for any behavior but following the rules and learning what they need to know.
As I felt at the time, we find out in this book that it was all a setup so that Arthur could infiltrate the English, spy where needed to give Bruce and his men the edge in his quest for the crown and trying to keep peace in the Highlands.

Arthurs latest assignment is to insinuate himself into the good graces of John of Lorn to learn what he can to hasten Bruces conquest of the man.
Hes been waiting for this opportunity for fourteen years after witnessing his fathers death at Lorns hands, Vengeance has been so much a part of his consciousness for so long that not even coming face to face with the most beautiful woman hes ever seen can deter him from his path.
Hes relieved that Anna, Lorns daughter, doesnt recognize him from a dangerous encounter a year before, He couldnt leave her at that time to walk into the middle of an ambush, and now he may pay for that with his life.

So Arthur does the only thing he can he avoids Anna or ticks her off, anything to keep her distracted.
But things just dont work that well for him, Circumstances happen that require both his extraordinary senses and his incredible speed, and Anna is much too perceptive and irked that he appears to dislike her so Arthur must be even more careful around her than hes ever been before.
But the woman has her own ideas, over and above what her father has asked of her, which is, of course, unbeknownst to Arthur.
She sees things in him that no one else does, things hed rather have left alone, Arthurs tightrope becomes more precarious by the moment in this mission he never wanted to begin with,

What makes this book for me is the situations Arthur finds himself in that require the use of his abilities.
More than once he saves Annas life with those abilities and that makes Anna suspicious, She never could imagine what she learns about this intriguing enemy of her family, though, The emotion between them goes back and forth between longing and hurt, because Arthur wants to do the right thing when it comes to Anna, even if there really isnt a right way that will turn out any way but bad for her.
But the man puts what he can into it, refusing to fail in his mission, The action scenes are done very well, sword fighting and flying arrows at the worst times,

The historical research thats going into this series is incredible, Ms. McCarty has interwoven her characters into past reality that makes reading it a delight, even despite the dire circumstances of the time.
I believe this is her best work to date, giving these characters such an emotional roller coaster in life to get through.
It all actually seems impossible at the end, but then thats why we read romance, for the impossible to happen,

This 'special ops Highlander' series is getting better and better as it progresses, By taking actual events from Scottish history and integrating them into her characters, she ups the stakes and manages to make this series even more addicting.
The Ranger is Arthur Campbell's story, He has been the dark horse in the series so far, so I was glad to learn some more about him.

Arthur "Ranger" Campbell has spent his years since his pretendouster from the rest of the Guard as a spy amidst the English.
With his superlative senses and fighting skills, he is invaluable in infiltrating beyond the enemy lines and relaying crucial information back to Robert Bruce.
Due to the nature of his role, he often feels like an outsider but with the threat from England felled, he anticipates joining the rest of the Guard.
However, his newest assignment from Bruce is definitely not one he can turn away from, He is sent to insinuate himself into the good graces of John of Lorne, the very man who treacherously killed his father in front of his eyes fourteen years ago.
Arthur has anticipated vengeance for so long, he is not deterred by the presence of Anna MacDougall, Lorn's daughter, a woman who poses a great threat to his mission.
In the spur of the moment, he saved Anna's life when she walked into an ambush a year ago although she doesn't seem to recognize him.

Arthur needs to strike balance to keep up his cover purposefully burying his skills so as not to stand out, yet appearing capable enough to gain favour.
But when Anna, in turns a gracious hostess and a girl drawn by him, follows him around the keep he learns that keeping up the deception means walking a very thin line.
Anna MacDougall is disconcerted at her unexplained fascination for the quiet and intense Campbell brother, She suspects there is so much more beneath the surface and when Lorn asks her to spy on him and verify his loyalty, she is happy to rise to the challenge.
And so the games beginboth Anna and Arthur trapped in an uneasy companionship, their motives at cross purposes with each others.

As I have mentioned in my previous reviews, I am completely in love with the way Ms McCarty weaves in real historical happenings with the romance narrative.
While the pushandpull of their companionship is hugely enjoyable, it's not until the/rd mark that the relationship starts to develop in complexity.
The action picks up from all quarters the ominous feeling of brewing war, the political maneuverings, as well as entangled feelings and loyalties of the protagonists.
I was as hooked onto the fight scenes, as to the seemingly insurmountable obstacles the author places before them,

I feel with this book, the Highland Guard series finally comes to its own, creating a distinct identity amongst the scores of Highland romances.

Yazarın kalemi o kadar akıcı ki hemen bitiyor kitaplar Why I liked 'The Ranger'

, Truly enjoyed romance between Arthur and Anna
, Loved how Monica writes a story that full of history
, There's no boring part in 'The Ranger'

Recommended!½, Its ok but I couldnt get excited about it, Nothing special about the plot or characters, I skimmed a few parts,

STORY BRIEF:
During battle Arthurs father could have killed Lorn but allowed Lorn to live if he surrendered.
The fighting was over, the father turned his back, then Lorn stabbed and killed him, Arthur was a boy when he saw this, He vowed to kill Lorn for revenge,

It is now years later, Arthur is one of the Highland Guard, a group of special warriors serving King Bruce, Most of the Scottish clans are united under Bruce except for about two, One of them is Lorns, Lorn is recruiting fighters to join him in fighting Bruce, Arthur joins Lorn as a spy, The problem is he falls in love with Lorns daughter Anna, She wants him and lets him know it, He tries to be cold and insulting to her, He knows she will hate him when she discovers he is a spy,

Arthurs uniqueness includes a psychic intuition knowing what is going to happen a few moments before it happens, He also has great skills with a sword and spear, When a spear is thrown, he can grab it out of the air before it hits the target, Hes the strong, silent, observant, loner type, Anna is smart, perceptive, determined, kind, and smiling, She

wants to help others,

REVIEWERS OPINION:
Most of the story is Arthurs approachavoidance conflict, He loves her but has to act like he doesnt, After their first passionate sexual encounter she tells him she loves him, but he acts like he doesnt care, He says “You see what you want to see not reality, Little girls who believe in faerie tales only grow up to be disappointed” page, By this time I was tired of his act, I wanted him to say yes I love you but lets not do anything until after the coming battle, So my summary: his hurting her and reluctance went on for too long, It was no fun after a while, and I skimmed a few parts,

There was some torture in the book which was unsettling, but not as bad as it could have been.
The rest of the story was ok but like many others, There were some good battle strategies and action and some good parts in the end, The authors note in the back of the book was impressive, She was historically accurate as much as possible regarding clans and battles,

Sex scenes were ok but might have benefited from a little more emotion,

Unfortunately Im annoyed with the publishers cover picture not matching Arthur who has dark hair curling in loose waves at his neck and forehead.
Cover guy has no hair below his ears,
