April,.
These are cute and funny, and lovely side stories and I like how it is based around the other Senshi :D
/Ehh this was pretty disappointing and also quite disturbing.
Ive been a fan of Sailor Moon for a while shes fun, silly, yet powerful, and the art of the show is beautiful and sparkly and tailored for little girls who grew up obsessed with stickers me.
I had never read any of the manga though and now I think I was better off that way, Im sure some of the disconnect is from the language and cultural disparities but I had a lot of problems with this, First of all the stories are pretty formulaic with jolted, cluttered dialogue that doesnt make a lot of sense plotwise, Secondly and most worryingly, all of the stories are about these middle school students trying to work toward getting a man with a wellpaying job so they can have good, secure futures.
This includes constantly making sure they dont eat too many sweets so they dont get too chubby what man will want a fat girl, being a competent homemaker and cook, and occasionally doing schoolwork in case the marriage thing doesnt work out.
I shit you not, every story had some version of “hi Im, I wonder if hed be good marriage material, oh no you saw my panties! blush” All of the male crushes were liketo middle aged so it was pretty gross.
Other than that, I still love the art, but Ill be cringing a little the next time I watch an episode of Sailor Moon, christmas means sailor moon time This was fun but not really anything necessary to read unless youre really into sailor moon like I am, Bagian yang paling kusuka dari sini adalah kisahkisah yang menceritakan pergolakan cinta Ami, Makoto, Rei dan Minako, Kisahkisah menjelang ujian akhir semester yang mereka hadapi, hehehe, Senang rasanya ketika kehidupan pribadi para Sailor Senshi dibahas dengan lebih mengedepankan kehidupan seharihari mereka meski pada akhirnya musuh bisa dipastikan selalu menyerang,
Sudahlah. Naoko Takeuchi "memang penuh misteri" XD No but seriously, what, Was that. This is mostly my feeling after the final story, because WHAT,
Let's start this review saying it's probably not a good idea to read this in one go after finishing the main series, I'm not saying it's bad, it's just a completely different tone from the ending, This is super cheerful and upbeat, which is pretty contrasting, I have the feeling you're meant to read some of them after you finished one of the main volumes as a kind of breather episode, That might be a better reading experience, anyway, Wasn't that sort of how they were published in the first place
Okay, onto the general reviews! I'll just throw them into separate categories: ChibiUsa's picture diaries, the inner senshi stories, and the final one.
ChibiUsa picture diary
I actually thought these were delightfully silly, and more childlike compared to the rest of the series which makes sense, seeing as how they star ChibiUsa, who may be much older than she looks but is still very much a child.
Vampires! Tanabata festival! CAVITIES! The last one is a bad one to read if you're already having trouble with your teeth, I can tell you that, I really enjoyed them once I got into their mood, And I loved how I read the Tanabata one at July, Only one day late!
The inner senshi
Wow, Ami, I think the only thing I got from this is 'AMI SURELY LOVES STUDYING', geesh, There were a lot of schoolrelated words in these stories, and mostly all of them came from Ami and then the rest complaining about it, It was nice to see more of Makoto and Ami in particular, though, even if Ami's story didn't really add much to her character in my opinion, My favourite story was Minako and Rei's I loved seeing more about their unexpected friendship and seeing more sides of them, Oh, Mina, never change. Your head is a wonderful place,
The Secret Hammer Price Hall
I seriously don't know what to make of this one, It was well, annoying. Man, I hated Ruruna and Naruru, if only because of their freaking annoying speaking habits and all the random arrows in their speech, And just their extremeness in general, I was basically Hotaru this whole chapter, She mostly had this expression on her face: "" Oh my god just shut up you two, Also, Mamoru, I hope you know you got a nosebleed over the younger sister of your girlfriend's classmate, She can't be much older than, So ehm, thank god for Hotaru in this otherwise pretty weird chapter, I think I missed a couple of things because I got too tired to look up all the slang Ruruna and Naruru use, oops,
Overall, it's a fun addition to the series, as long as you're in the mood for it, The last story in particular made me raise my eyebrows a lot, but alright, still five, because it's Sailor Moon and this not being my favourite doesn't mean it's bad all of a sudden.
Also, I'm biased because of the pretty cover and the stickers, And that cover of Rei and Minako is lovely, I AM OBVIOUSLY VERY GOOD AT GIVING OBJECTIVE REVIEWS, A really fun collection of stories!
I know the anime made episodes out of a couple of them at least, so that was fun, Although I would really prefer seeing these short stories animated, this first volume of the Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon short stories was mostly entertaining, I feel like there's a missing spark seeing this on paper rather than on a screen, but Naoko Takeuchi brings some great personal moments with our Inner Senshi and others that shows they're more than just background while Usagi gets the spotlight.
"ChibiUsa's Picture Diary" wasn't as funny as I was expecting, but it was a refreshing change of pace to have her be our main protagonist the cavity story was my favorite out of the three chapters.
With the exam stories, Minako and Rei's was absolutely hysterical in that we get to see Minako call Rei 'wench' repeatedly ouch and actually see some genuine jealousy on Minako's side towards the sassy shrine maiden.
It also gave much more padding to Rei's character and showed a real genuine connection/friendship between them, Plus, Minako is just a fantastic and bubbly narrator who once in the story asked Rei if she farted while meditating that sounds like something Grace Helbig would say.
I really enjoyed her voice,
The last short story is one with ChibiUsa again as main narrator and Hotaru providing backup as they dealt with crazy gradeschool students with valley girl speak named Naruru and Ruruna.
It was an absolute blast that held a pawn shop, a kind manager who embroidered cosplay and other clothes, and the crazy girls attempting to defeat our villain, It was the right amount of ridiculous and crazy that would make an absolutely wonderful OVA or episode if the staff of Sailor Moon Crystal decided to go back and adapt the material.
Overall, a fun if expected collection of stories that put a smile on my face and yet had me yearning to see it all play out in real life.
It's still the Sailor Moon pickmeup I needed, but I can't help but think this would look better in movement rather than flipping through pages,
sitelink blogspot. com A collection of seven offthewall and funny short stories of 'Sailor Moon' none of which are actually about Sailor Moon herself, but her Guardian friends,
First off there's 'ChibiUsa's Picture Diary: Beware the Transfer Student' About Chibiusa's first days at school, her classmates, and vampires, Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus are idols for Chibiusa as well as for the rest of the kids, They show up to defeat a vampire in a few panels, Cute art, standard story for littleuns, and BTW, I didn't know vampires liked flowers,
The second story is called, 'ChibiUsa's Picture Diary: Beware of Tanabata', revolving around the Chinese legend of Tanabata: of Shokujo and Kengyu, Haruka and Michiru make a cute cameo appearance, Mamoru is an idiot, the cats roles diminish as time goes on, and there's straw feminism mixed with stereotyped assumptions about men as well.
Plus, like with the 'Codename: Sailor V' manga, there's the implication that only young, slim, pretty girls can be happy because they'll have handsome men in their lives, I wouldn't call this a subversion or deconstruction of an old legend when it sorely relies on gender stereotypes to get its point across,
Third is 'ChibiUsa's Picture Diary: Beware
of Cavities' A typical monsteroftheweek story about fearing dentists, Add in a rather weak healthyeating message and the jobs done no insight to be found here, At least Sailor Moon and Sailor Venus share in a battle again with Chibiusa thank heaven this is her last "Picture Diary" entry she's had enough of the spotlight.
And wow these stories are excessively boisterous! I'd even call the artwork for the comedy scenes an eyesore,
Now onto the 'Exam Battle Stories' exactly what it says on the tin, The Inner Sailor Guardians are at their high school entrance examination period, Ridiculous evil spirits to fight come and go, too, In 'The Melancholy of MakoChan', we learn more about everyone's favourite vigorous and feminine "big sister" Guardian, Makoto Kino /Sailor Jupiter, as she procrastinates studying to go bargainhunting for pretty things, to cook, clean, and drink tea during the girls' study groups.
'AmiChan's First Love' Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury studies hard nearly all the time, and contrary to her usual kind nature, where exams are concerned she is tough on her friends to study as well.
She can understand and solve any and every problem, Except for love letters, which make her break out in hives, In this story, she obsessively competes against a rival who keeps getting the same perfect score as her in mock exam results, to the point where she might be falling in love with someone she only knows by pen name.
Of course Ami's ideal man would be Albert Einstein, and with so much emphasis on her being extremely intelligentIQ!, why would she choose her own exam board pen name to be "Mercury" Isn't that a dead giveaway of her secret identity Like if Clark Kent were to submit a story to the Daily Planet under the name, “Supes” Or if Bruce Wayne ran a business called, “Bat Management” But aside from that, this is a great Amicentered story.
She is drawn with such an array of expressions it's both funny and charming, and boy is she competitive! My favourite line, from Minako, is, ""Rival equals enemy," eh I think I'll stop trying to improve my grades, then, since I don't wanna get killed by AmiChan!" Umino appears! Even Usagi remarks that she forgot about his existence in the past year!
'Rei's and Minako's Girls School Battle' An instant favourite if you're a Rei/Minako fan and consider the pairing to be canon, or you think it should be They always look the perfect match when drawn together.
We delve into the hyperactive, boycrazy, superficial mind of one Minako Aino/Sailor Venus, and what she thinks of each of her friends, including her exact opposite, Rei Hino/Sailor Mars.
Despite being jealous of Rei, Minako does admire her more "refined" friend, This could be interpreted as their own special love story about a lovehate relationship between two teenage girls growing up into high school age, with new, wider experiences ahead of them.
The seventh and fortunately the last story is, 'Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Side Story: The Secret Hammer Price Hall', It is full of valley girl speak, Oh joy. I hate this sexist stereotype, its overuse in the media in thesearlys, and how it typically has vapid Barbie clones effortlessly butcher the English language merely by opening their mouths.
In this case its most bizarre because the two valley girls are meant to be speaking Japanese They are called Ganguro girls here: Culture sharing Approbation My eye twitches just reading the horrendous dialogue, even if it is parody and I don't blame the translator for the interpretation.
One other thing I do not care about brands, and I never have, Why would Chibiusa be friends with such airheads in the first place At least Hotaru Tomoe is at hand in her part as the straight man she is my hero in this.
While there are some genuinely funny moments "Chubster Mask" made me laugh out loud, and the selfaware Sailor Moon laments her lack of presence in these stories, despite being the main character it is obnoxious and messy overall.
Theres too many grown men fetishizing young girls, and apparently 'Sailor Moon' is a franchise in its own universe, with its own cosplay, manga and anime, Whatever, clearly it's not meant to be taken seriously, just like the other stories, And whenever an enemy shows up, why do the Sailor Guardians keep transforming from their civilian identities in public, in front of everyone
Another thing, isn't the cover of this volume the cutest, most precious thing ever Takeuchisan's art continues to amaze me.
My final 'Sailor Moon' manga review is coming up: with the second short stories volume, containing, in my opinion, much better and more sophisticated storytelling the best the franchise has to offer.
Final Score:./.
