up with adding this one, Reread the ending and I remember most of it terrible how soon they can fade,
Whittal is another old school I enjoy, I'm very much here for 'heroes who are only soft, likable, and loving to thisoneperson who can only see they are, indeed, soft likable and loving.
' And she does variations on that and does it well his hard, cold looks frighten or put her off until they have their dawning realization and then ahh, bliss, same look but she finally gets the true meaning.
Also heightened emotions, good spark, and usually snappy dialogue with interesting twists and turns of events that aren't tortured in contrivance.
That's a bit of a digression,
Kids in this one, Not too precocious or precious, Another woman to be a barrier, but she's not a harpy, The heroine is nuanced in recovering from a bad accident and the hero if you too look for it and then ahh, yes, see it falls for her early on and fights it every step.
Both himself and trying to drag out her response to fall too, Did like the heroine, and some of the side characters like hero's mom, the kids, But then disliked the hero and the other side characters like the creepy farm manager, mean other woman, exfiance, The heroine was kissed against her will bydifferent dudes! Including the hero more than once! Ohhhhkay, Hero was just too mean, I don't know a single thing about him! What does he like to eat What does he dislike on the farm Just nada, he was just an idea not a character.
That's why I get the heroine trying to keep her distance from him, which he doesn't allow, Read for the heroine but imagine she has a better story and better love interest, This Summer of the Weeping Rain's main theme in four words: HOLY SEXUAL HARASSMENT, BATMAN!
Usually I hate these cheap Harlequin Romance novels technically, I read this one as the original hardcover Mills amp Boon edition.
I read them because I know I will hate them, The horror of them is what draws me in, "Hmmm" I wonder "how bad can it get"
This book was, . . not that bad. Formulaic, of course. It takes place in the Karoo region of South Africa, in "the veld, " It amuses me that the cover of the book shows the house sitting in a lush green paradise, while The Mister sits on his horse in a pool of water.
I looked up the Karoo thank you, internet and you know what it looks like Like Iraq as shown in "The Hurt Locker.
" Lush and green NO.
In this book, Lisa actually has a reason for acting like an idiot around The Man, The impetus for her taking a job as a nanny on a remote sheep farm comes from a devastating car accident which scarred her face, makes her walk with a limp and need a cane, and led to the end of her engagement.
A friend of hers was killed, and she suffers psychologically from the memories of the accident and the break up with her fiance.
She has completely lost her self confidence, So at least there is a reason for her behavior,
The Man runs the sheep farm and prefers to ignore his orphaned nephew and niece as much as possible, and the nanny.
But when one of the children falls down an abandoned well, Lisa climbs down after him and takes care of him while the other child runs for help.
This impresses The Man and he starts showing his interest buying her expensive gifts, trying to kiss her, She thinks he could not possibly be interested in her in any serious way and tries to fend him off, The family next door includes a beautiful and unscarred young woman who plays on Lisa's insecurities in order to scare her off, which works for a time.
At least in this one, the female character is not portrayed as afraid of men and afraid of sex.
That is always annoying! Pretty good old school romance, Written inand the book is a bit dated in spots, There's a slam or two against women's lib, And really the hero had no concept of "no means no, " But we're just talking punishing kisses here, This book is totally clean as is usual for HRs of this period,
I liked the characters, The heroine, Lisa, is dainty, quite and self contained but she and the hero strike sparks from each other, The hero, Adam, is big and harsh and nasty to her at times especially in the beginning, The conflict revolves around a Big Misunderstanding perpetrated by the Other Woman, Willa, You could see the progression as the hero fell for the heroine even without his POV, That was pretty well done, The writing was good and flowing,
Might not like a steady diet of these old Harleys but they're fun to read every once in a while.
Argh Why does Ms Whittal portrays her heroines to be so proud and dumb I like most of this author's romances, especially the ones with plenty of tension and romantic conflict.
For some reason I couldn't get into this, it seemed so predictable, I skimmed it, read the entire ending, Nice story, just a bit boring today,
Reread and like better although H is a stereotype and h wimpy, DNF. too much alpha male. bleech. A young woman is recovering from a serious car accident, She realizes that her fiancé is horrified at being saddled with a limping scarred woman so she breaks the engagement by giving him the ring back.
Dirtbag grabs the ring and makes a run for it, Broken spirited and deeply depressed, she accepts a shortmonth assignment to care for twins who have recently been orphaned and now under the guardianship of their uncle.
By accepting this assignment, she hopes to be able to recover both physically and mentally by removing herself from the scene of the accident and her broken engagement.
The sparks really fly between the two of them and we even get an evil OW that turns the tension dial up a few more notches.
There were a lot of "rough" moments in this HP and had it been written today, hero would have definitely been charged for sexual harassment.
But I could look past most of his asshat moments because I knew he was absolutely "bonkers" for the heroine,
Given this was written during apartheid, there are a couple of spots where the references to racial segregation just didn't sit well with me.
I found that dimension rather unsettling,
This is my second Yvonne Whittal's book and, well, it's slightly better than the other one I've read.
Mostly because, even though the Hero's a bit unbelievable, at least he's reasonable, I mean, the way he treated the heroine is sure could be infuriating sometimes but hey, he's a classic case of Alpha male.
He can't help it. But the heroine Gosh. She's so. . Stupidly childish. She didn't act her age and her being stubborn in the wrong time is annoying, Ugh, I just want to smack the light out of her,
I love the twins, I hope Whittal write a good ending to them because it seems like she forgot their existence in the happiness of Lisa and Adam, our main characters.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, though not so much and I look forward to read more from this author.

For readers who like to know where titles come from Yvonne Whittal has helpfully included lines from the George MacDonald poem, "Sweet Peril," that inspired her to write this story of a heroine who has been injured in a car accident and rejected by her fiance.
Alas, how easily things go wrong!
A sigh too much, or a kiss too long,
And there follows a mist and a weeping rain,
And life is never the same again.
The h's life is certainly never the same again after she accepts a job as a nanny for orphaned twins on their uncle's South African sheep ranch.
This is a recovery story for not only the heroine, but the children and their grandmother as they heal from the tragic plane crash deaths of their family members.
The journey from health to wellness is very satisfying,
I also found the romance satisfying, The hero is alpha with his punishing kisses and his bursts of anger and neediness, but he has scenes of kindness to show what kind of man he will be when he's not in throes of unrequited love.
I appreciated that the author didn't forget the children's loss and that the heroine pulls herself together before even thinking about falling in love with the hero.
I liked her character a lot except for not confronting the hero about engagement rumors but then this story would have beenpages shorter.
The extra half star is for how the author ends with this section of the poem, which really sums up how a good romance operates:
And things can never go badly wrong
If the heart be true and the love be strong,
For the mist, if it comes, and the weeping rain
Will be changed by the love into sunshine again.
Read it a long time ago, Typical romance. Good read about a nanny who falls for her boss, He falls hard too but she is too blind to see it plus there is heroine's ex fiancé and an evil other woman who wants but can't have our smitten hero! La versione italiana di questo romanzo dovrebbe essere Lacrime di pioggia nella versione italiana hanno cambiato i nomi Ann Moreau e Guy Vandeleur.
