Seize House Of The Hanged Presented By Mark Mills Distributed As Interactive EBook
book had a confusing start and then a cliched main body, The characters spoke inth century jargon "you were there for me" and the love story was frankly a bit weird! Why would anyear old girl find the main character attractive.
. I carried on it was ok, but the car chases etc were monotonous and agree that Tom didnt ring true, This is the first book I have read by the this author and I found it quietly entertaining, This book does not leap out at you from page to page, it is subtly engaging, The author writes with great panache and I found every sentence interestingly written, Sadly I read very slowly and absorb every sentence, analysing how the sentence is written and whether I would change it if I was given permission conversely, my wife skim reads in literally hours, she gave up on it after aboutpages, stating it as "a bit wittery" ! so if you are the same sort of reader as me, you will enjoy this book.
It needs slow, steady, careful reading, with the story almost of secondary interest, The plot rolls along steadily and you can put it down and come back to it easily, its not a desperate page turner like some authors put all their efforts into e.
g. Dan Brown. I don't care too much about a few reported historical inaccuracies as others appear to do, there are hardly any, The author is not focused on character building to death to become almost patronising to the reader e, g. Stieg Larsson, Dan Brown both of whom I will not read another book from ever if that positions my opinions with yours own somehow! The author has certainly not heavily researched his story to enable him to load historical detail into the plot, as other authors do e.
g. Robert Harris who I think writes great stories, the focus here is on keeping the reader interested with a natural and engaging turn of phrase and appears to genuinely think about what he wants to write about his characters and what he wants to leave you to create in your own mind.
I have since bought the The Whaleboat House from reading the other reviews of this author's books, as it seems to score highlyMy only negative comment really is that the editorial of the book is pretty poor, there must be half to a dozen editorial mistakes in the book, which I find unusual, you usually expector even.
I'm sure Harper Collins will correct this in any subsequent prints, This is an ok read but disappointing in comparison toThe Savage Garden, The Whaleboat House or even The Information Officer, all by the same author.
I hated the title which is explained by an isolated, throwaway reference to the suicide of the previous owner of the house, It's interesting that in the States it is titled The House of the Hunted to my mind, a appropriate title, I clearly enjoyed this book, The characters were believable if a little stereotypical, The setting was much remembered and enjoyed part of France without being too specific, My only problem was being convinced of the period of time between the wars, I needed to keep reminding myself but that's probably because it's something of a mercurial, somewhat non specific time that I know too little about.
An enjoyable read. Tom Nash lives in Toulon, France, It is Julyand Europe is heading to war, mirroring Tom's feeling that his comfortable life is over, Tom lives a quiet life, surrounded by good friends and neighbours, but it never used to be like that, He spent most of his life working for the Secret Intelligence Services SIS, working directly for his friend Leonard, who is the father of his beloved god daughter, Lucy, Haunted by his inability to rescue his pregnant lover, Irina, from Russia in, he is now a successful writer, When he meets Lucy and looks forward to the summer when all his closest friends get together, there already seem to be portents that things will not be as comfortable as usual.
First, his loyal dog, Hector, has gone missing, Then, there is an attempt on his life which suggests whoever was behind it, knew the layout of his home, Suddenly, a place which has always felt safe doesn't, and someone he is close to has betrayed him, As the summer goes on much as usual, Tom tries to discover who is behind the attempt on his life, This book is an excellent read, with a great cast of characters who all begin to be looked at differently by Tom, whose past comes crashing back to haunt him.
You have Leonard, his poisonous wife Venetia and her daughter Lucy Yevgeny and Fanya Martynov, Russian emigre artists and the visiting American, Walter Tom's old friend Barnaby Benoit and Chantal who helped Tom when he brought his home Klaus and Ilse Straub, journalists fleeing Nazi Germany Tom's girlfriend Helene and his old friends Beatriz and Margot, two elderly ladies who live locally.
Everything is there to create an excellent atmospheric thriller sinister Russians, the spectre of Nazi Germany and the great setting of the French Riviera in the's.
It has all the ingredients for a wonderful novel and the author brings it off brilliantly, I actually took it on holiday with me and, as others have already commented, it does make a brilliant summer read, Excellent and very enjoyable book, From the Nobestseller and author of Richard Judy pick The Savage Garden a riveting tale of passion and murder set on the French Riviera in thes for fans of Carlos
