adicting and funnt book i was really good but at the beggining it was kinda boring Sean Cullen is a very funny comedian and this book really reflects that! Myyr old thought it was very funny and a great action story.
I enjoyed it as well, Hamish X is an orphan, or at least that's what everyone thinks, He claims to still have a mother, who left him an incredibly dull book on plumbing as the only clue to her whereabouts, One day he is brought by the ODA to Viggo's cheese factory where they produce Caribou Blue Cheese Milking Caribou Very, Very Difficult!, For Viggo this is a nightmare, He's used to getting orphans for free to work in his factory, and if they're a little feisty, he beats the spirit out of them, Hamish X refuses to be broken and in fact often mocks Viggo, Add to that the fact that he's become friends with Mimi and Parveen a few more of Viggo's least favorite people, and that the cheese pirates are on the loose, and you have an explosion just waiting to happen! But the overwhelming mystery is, Who is Hamish X and why can't his boots come off
This story is hilarious!!! You also have the beauty of a funny narrator, who aids the storytelling by inserting comments in the form of footnotes wherever "he" feels it's necessary.
The footnotes are simply priceless comedy! I really love this book, It is really interesting and sort of mysterious, but is hilarious at the same time, I would reccomend this book to just about anyone, If you are reading this book, DO NOT skip the footnotes! I LOVED IT, It was not scary Funny! Sean Cullen is a great Canadian comedian and even better author! Love this book series and its now nostalgic to me because Im in mys now and this came out back when I was in gradein.
Good read Brighton approved Started the book but didnt finish, I wasn't in the mood for the type of story telling like the How To Train Your Dragon book which I kind of enjoyed reading aloud to my kids.
May have enjoyed it moreyears ago, I came to enjoy this book, even as I was annoyed by its selfindulgent footnotes and repulsed by its celebration of the gross and uncouth, It succeeds brilliantly at its purpose to be entertaining, witty, outrageously inventive kid fiction in the tradition of Roald Dahl and Louis Sachar, I think that I should try to read that book as soon as possible because it sounds like a great choice to read
Hamish X and the Cheese Pirates is the story of a young boy named Hamish X who is a member of the Orphan Disposal Agency.
Two agents, Candy and Sweet, can not find a facility that Hamish can't escape from, When Hamish arrives at a disgusting cheese factory in Windcity, which creates Caribou Blue cheese, he meets two "friends", who are named Mimi and Parveen, A couple of weeks later, a fierce cheese pirate attack occurs and everyone from the factory is snatched except the three friends, Hamish, Mimi, and Parveen, The pirates also take Hamish's special book from Viggo who is the cheese factory boss, This sends Hamish on a journey after the pirates, . . Will he get his book back Will he survive I recommend this book to people who enjoy adventure and fiction books, I read this book in grade seven and thought I would enjoy reading it again, This book is absolutely brilliant!! It may seem like a joke at first, but I tell you now that it is way more than you may think in its face.
It has wonderful comedy in general, fruitful footnotes, and lots of adventure amp action in an amazing start to a trilogy!
I caught myself getting enveloped in the characters quite easily, and the story.
It's one of those books you read and eagerly move through it, It's a wonderfully made book and Sean knows how to keep someone interested, I honestly will read this book, and series, overandover again without a doubt, This series is more of a kids to young adults kind of reading material, but whatever your cuppa! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a step into a very enjoyably different/quirky adventure.
It's not a book series you should pass up otherwise : yo yo yo I remember reading this book as a kid and really enjoying it, It was fun and it kept my attention that's all you can really ask for, I had no idea, and still don't know, who Sean Cullen was, I think I found it on a library shelf somewhere, I thought Hamish X was dashing and witty, and a little sad, This book made me think children are smarter than adults, and adults really have no substance to them, Meh. A. J. read it first, Karannina read it next and their conversation about the story intrigued me, So I read it too, Very strong characters and an unexpected plot a favorite of mine, I loved this book when I read it for some production coverage so entertaining, imaginative and great characters, Stinky cheese bearded villain is always thought of when considering costumes! Great read for agesThis book is clever in so many ways, I can think of many readers that would love this book but it just isn't my favourite, The witty foot notes and creative characters would engage many young readers, Okay. Not quite as funny as Lemony Snickett a little more obviously trying to be quirky but still interesting, plot twists, and wine good Dave Barry flavour, I stumbled on this book in the education library a few years ago at University, and I am so very glad I did, The humour in it is so accessible, I can't imagine anyone not finding it amusing even if not everyone will find it as funny as I did, The characters' outrageous adventures and ridiculous schemes are so appealing to the daydreamer in me, and oh! the footnotes: I laughed out loud so many times, I intend to read it to my children in the future, Canadian comedian and winner of two Gemini Awards, Sean Cullen makes his first venture into childrens literature with this first story in a series of Hamish X adventures,
In an epic style and with a traditional plot of good versus evil, Sean Cullen leads the reader on a humourous orphan adventure, Three orphans lead by the mysterious and valiant Hamish X, trek across the Arctic to defeat Cheesebeard and his villainous pirate gang,
The story begins with a cheese factory full of orphans ruled by the evil Viggo Schmatz, The infamous Hamish X arrives at the orphanage and with the help of fellow orphans Mimi and Parveen he hatches a plan to escape just as he has from all other orphanages he has been sent to.
When the cheese pirates arrive and take all of the orphans except Hamish X, Mimi, and Parveen they have to change their plans and set out to save the day.
The plot moves along well with twists, turns and cliffhangers peppered with hilarity and silly footnotes, The footnotes can be distracting at times but are well worth reading as they add to the absurdity and humour of the narrative,
This witty and appealing story is entertaining on many levels and will make adults chuckle and children giggle,
Sean Cullen is a very funny, very bizarre man, and this, his first book, really showcases what he's capable of, This book features orphans, sweatshops, piracy, cheese, monkeys, and many other disparate elements, all brought together with surprising coherency by Cullen's signature style of humour, Definitely worth a read, although the plot itself is rather straightforward, and Cullen definitely shows that he's a firsttime author with this work, We loved this book. We loved this series. A terrible thing to admit I didn't think that I would like this book or series, Although I have always enjoyed Sean Cullen as a host on the CBC, I really didn't think I'd like him as an author because it seemed to me that he was too manic to focus for long on anything.
I was so pleasantly surprised and wish I could let him know that I regret being pessimistic about his written work, We bought allbooks in this series so that he could sign them when he was playing Smee in a Stratford production of Peter Pan a few years ago.
He was amazing on stage, reasonable as he signed the books all three of the comments he wrote were very funny and is wonderful as a children's author, Page after page left us laughing so hard and we had an endless discussion going about the endnotes and footnotes he added on so many pages, His Hamish X is a wonderful character and the friendships he develops and he goes through some amazing adventures can be compared to those of Harry, Hermione and Ron.
We've read this book more than once, take it off of the shelf often and have always been successful when we've given it as a gift, All the more thrilling, I heard Sean Cullen being interviewed once and he said he wrote this series for his son also named Hamish because he wanted a wonderful series to be out there for that age group.
We are so glad that he did, I suppose it was ok, I could not get Sean Cullen's voice out of my head tho, it was pretty obvious who the narrator was, so don't believe the Helsinki crap, Spoiler: Kipling leaves his greenhouse behind, I suppose I need to learn the secret of the boots now,
Ajuryn review
My favorite parts were the little parts on the bottom of the page, especially the one about saskatoon
A wonderful book.
