in France to the exile on St, Helena. For the reader with a good concept of the overall history of the era, the daily machinations of the General will be a revelation.
I was aware that Napoleon played a little bit fast and loose with the truth but I was still a bit staggered that almost every page feature a falsehood of some kind, and many his constant admonitions to his Marshalls and Minister to lie even more!.
Napoleon was constantly trying to make his legend even more legendary in constant "spin" mode as we would call it today,
It's all in here The Revolution, Toulon, Italy , Josephine, The Great Battles, the spanish Mess, the Russian Goosechase, The German/Austrian Revenge, Waterloo and exile.
But the stops along the way are fascinating too, Egypt. The Creation of the Code Napoleon, The Killing of the Duc D'Enghien, Each element get mentioned somewhere, I chose to read the book as a stream of consciousness, relying on my extensive knowledge of the period to help me understand the references, but there is apage ! "Biographical Notes" section for those who are now to the era.

With the use of the notes and some guidance about the level of dissembling and prevarication, this could be a fine book for a junior reader.
For the Gamer/Modeller/Military Enthusiast, this is a real joy to read, Not that Scenarios or Dioramas will be improved, but the reader will find a real connection to the period, reading a daily record of events.
This is great for getting a real feel for the period, and the man who caused all the agitation, A strong rec. In the Words of the Emperor is a startling insight into the life and deeds of Napoleon, Derived from Napoleon's extensive correspondence
