Gaughan not only lays out some brilliant thematic units of study for the English classes he teaches i, e. racism, sexism, war, sexuality, etc, but also confesses to his inner struggle a struggle all teachers face with drawing the line between allowing the prejudices and intolerance our students may have to go unchallenged or indoctrinating them with what we believe to be right and just.
Gaughan cites numerous realworld texts, novels, and poems that he uses in each unit to provide his students with a balanced and engaging experience when
exploring these sensitive topics, and he shares some masterful teaching strategies and assessment ideas for teachers who want to transform their curriculum into an enlightening debate that fosters responsible and engaged citizenry.
Really, I think this book is a fourandahalf, which still is a pretty high score from me, I liked it mostly because I agree with Gaughan's philosophy of education in which students must be critical thinkers and use those skills for a better society.
However, I doubt the reality of implementing Gaughan's methods in the classroom as a complete pedagogy, It contains different topics that need to be addressed in our classrooms with our students who are highly influenced by today's media, community, social problems and economy. For John Gaughan, preparing his students for life is just as important as preparing them for college, He doesn't sacrifice one for the other he just uses different content, Instead of ignoring the controversial issues that emerge from discussions of gender, race, and sexuality, he addresses these issues head on in the literature and writing he assigns.
This is the kind of teaching Gaughan advocates in Reinventing Englishteaching that occurs in the contact zone,
Reinventing English is about creating opportunities in the English classroom for students to become thoughtful, committed citizens, It is about encouraging them to air their views honestly and forthrightly, The pedagogy that Gaughan uses is process based, In addition to strategies for writing about reading, creating learning centers, and writing in multiple genres, he discusses activities to promote discussion, stimulate debate, and rethink first thoughts.
To help you get started, the book includes handouts for a number of these strategies, including ones for fourcorner debates, writing poems for two voices, and working in literature circles.
Such teaching can be risky business, It may offend the sensibilities of students, parents, administrators, and colleagues, Some teachers may not find these risks worth taking, It would be safer to remain in the comfort zone and avoid messy confrontations about class and culture, sex and sexuality, But would we be sparing our students similar confrontations later in life,
