Check Out The Virgins Designed By Siddharth Tripathi Compiled As Hardbound
always hard to give less to the books which you won in giveaways, So this is happening to me again and again, But I think nonbiased criticism would improve the standards of writers,
As I said ,I won this book on giveaways and I haven't got the copy in the first post so I posted in some goodreads forums and finally author responded to me and sent me this book.
I am glad that the author was a great help in getting the book, As soon as I got the book I started reading it, In the first sitting I readpages continuously, without feeling anything either like nor dislike, I just read it. During a little busy schedule, whenever I got a chance I read this, I havebooks lag on my target so that really made me to complete this book,
To talk about the plot of the book, there is no specific plot or conflict in the book, It's like biography ofguys and some other stupid characters, They mostly talk about sex and crime, Their hangout discussions and their individual family problems and blah blah, Author portrays the characters from the start of the book as one is good, another is neutral and other guy as bad, So the whole book goes around their characters, Pinku's character deal with his crush 'Sushma', Mukund character is all about his separated parents and the final worst character Guggi is all about his wicked politics.
Every chapter has a specific quote in the start, In the start I thought that was unique and would tell some story but as I was progressing I failed to figure out the relation of it to the content of that chapter.
The only one quote I like from the book is 'My Escape is Maya Too!', Now I am disappointed that it is not written by author,
As there is no specific plot there is no specific ending, I think author tries to give a completeness to the book so he killed some characters, I never felt the difference in the character voice, All characters talk almost similar I believe that author would have worked more in bringing unique tone to each character, In general newbie writers start their career with collection of short stories but Siddharth attempted a different approach by writing apage novel but he did the same thing inside the book.
Mostly, the characters talk about sexual things I don't think sex is not the only thing that exist in India, I haven't read many Indian authors but I started hating them, They deal with only love and sex, If this continues this will be the face of Indian literature, I think this is partial autobiography of author, I believe that you are what you write,
I wouldn't recommend this to anyone and I don't think I wouldn't have read it or bought it if I didn't win this on giveaways.
I really wanted to give more harsh review but for me it's not possible to write more than this, I feel responsible to give this much review just because I got this in giveaways,
P. S: Just helped me in increasing another book to my read shelf,
P. S. S: I recommend all these Indian writers to watch 'Ship Of Theseus' movie, There is a lot around us rather than just sexual things, my dear brothers and sisters,
P. S. S. S: Continuous two Indian authors Strikeand this one, OMG I should read some awesome book to recover from this,
Siddharth has woven a beautiful interplay of some simple characters and their complex circumstances, . . the book engages the reader with a staged unfolding of who these characters think they are, who others think they are and who they actually are, . .
Some befitting descriptions, real as life incidences, unbelievable happenings and a racy plot makes this a perfect debut, . .
A must read for all those who want to experience the small town life because they missed living in one! A real goodread Considering that this is author's first book, it is good.
Good storyline, well crafted characters and a pacy narrative, I finished the book in a single go, All and all, thumbs up to the book, Also the vividness of the city of Banaras and the culture their could be visualised through the narrative, By Siddharth Tripathi. Grade: C
When one sees such glowing reviews for a book along with a great cover, expectations automatically go up, Alas, if only everything could live up to such expectations,
The best written part of the book is the synopsis concise, brief and direct, Another positive thing could be the mannerism the depiction of Varanasi touch in the book is put to good use, Our three protagonists represent three different facets of human behaviour, We all crave adventure something which was depicted by the character of Guggi albeit a tad too much, We all have our demons and seek solace in something foreign, something unknown with a promise of respite showcased through Bhandu, We all fail at some point in our lives and sometimes, due to somebody elses fault portrayed in Pinkus backdrop,
However, the book has no structure the progression of events appears completely random, the reason being the lack of connectivity between two successive events, In a novel, especially in a fiction one, one of the secondary responsibilities of an author is to ensure that the advancement from one chapter to another is free of bumps or speed breakers.
This was something which was missing from The Virgins, Even the character sketch is weak, making the characters extremely forgettable, None of the central characters Bhandu, Pinku or Guggi had any memorable attribute, one which any reader could connect to, It could be argued that these characters are hat ke unique, but in that case, their unique attributes are not that prominent either, Another problem is characters with extended back stories popping out of nowhere and adding next to nothing to the plot, At times, things become too crass for no reason and the writing is above average at best, But these are not the primary problems of the novel,
The primary problem with the novel is the story, The central plot portrayed by the novel is tantamount to nothing, Any novel worth reading has to have a plot which is at least substantial, which in the case of The Virgins is missing, There can be two explanations for this:
The plot got lost in the writing, possibly due to the effort to make itodd pages long, and couldnt come across.
The author visualized some incidents, made some sort of a montage out of them and put it into words,
The following comments, arguendo, could be subjective, Having read fiction all my life, I sincerely believe that every fictional novel serves, or at least aims, at some purpose, Pick any good novel worth its salt and youll see that it aims at a purpose, The Virgins, in all its capacity, serves no such purpose, Its the fluff equivalent of a bag of candy, If I were asked to give one word for The Virgins, the word would be “random, ” In all fairness, if youre looking for nothing but to while away a couple of interesting hours, The Virgins would not be a bad way to go.

They were the days when there were many mails flooding my mail box from authors, publishers and marketers, alike, asking to review so and so book.
One of those mails contained a mail from Bharti Teneja, Marketing Manager of Prakash Books, It read,
Hi Sudeep,
I got your reference from a friend and would love to get views on our latest release The Virgins by Siddharth Tripathi.
Enclosed is the brief and a presentation which the author has done, Do let me know if you would like to review it and send me your postal address,
Thanks
Bharti
Those days The Virgins was one of the best in the market, considering the critics, I had a very bad time trying to refrain myself from right away accepting the offer, That would have been so unprofessional, So, instead, I sent a short reply asking Bharti to go through our review policy and contact me if they are okay with the terms mentioned, I secretly feared, what if Bharti didn't contact me back, I mentally made a note to wait for four days, if Bharti didn't contact back before that, I would order the book, Such was the liking the plot of this book developed in me, Fortunately, Bharti did reply back saying, something like, "I have gone through your review policy already, Tell me the shipping address so that we could ship you the book, "
Well, I was more than happy to accept,
Plot from the jacket:

With their Classexams around the corner, Guggi, restless to leave a mark, takes over the schools notorious protection racket in a violent coup, The fallout drags the trio into a murky world of heartbreak, betrayal, and bloody vengeance, . .
Fast, funny, and earthy, The Virgins is a comingofage novel that marks the debut of
a promising writer,

My view of the book:
Cover design:
If you have read my LWCITCT post of this book you could have understood the fondness I developed for the cover of this book.
It is the perfect cover design material, It has one of the best cover design in the market, so far, It has the exact colour, the colour of radium, which will not only draws one's attention,
To read the entire review, sitelinkclick here, . . A well written story close to home is always special, Any good book is enjoyable but when the characters speak your language and the stories are something close to ones personal experience, the fun of reading is enhanced.
For those who have spent their childhood in the second tier towns and cities of India, where a Pinku will be never be called Pinku but Pinkuwa, a Bhandari becomes Bhandu or some other distortion, this book brings back to life the setup under which the middle class societies operates.
Through boys full of funny devilish ideas, with ambitions gripped by moral dilemmas and family constrictions, love in its innocent and obsessive forms, school and gangwars,a section of the city of Varanasi is brought to life in vivid detail.
An enjoyable book for anyone who is inquisitive to have a look around, .
