Snag Of Fire And Ash (Fairy Queens, #1.5) Narrated By Amber Argyle Expressed As Softcover

the heroine, wants to make her family proud, her violent brother to love her, and to hide her secret ability to see the fairies all around her.
But her world is harsh and cruel, And the fairies don't give anything without a price,

I found Nelay a mix of childlike hope and fighter spirit, She will do anything to save her father, but mourns the loss of her sheep at the same time, Her brother is cruel, her mother is broken from too much grief, and her father is dying, She is placed in an impossible situation, and chooses to ask the fairies for aid,

The fairies themselves were each unique, which I loved! They were cold, and uncaring about the world of man, but something about Nelay catches their attention.
They maintain the Balance, without sympathy for the pain it causes others, I found their blend of beauty and indifference to add a strong sense of foreboding for Nelay's future,

This book is a novella, so it a quick read, It will be great to see where her character goes in the upcoming Summer Queen, the second book in Amber Argyle's Fairy Queens series.

Enjoy! Of Fire and Ash, book,in the Fairy Queens series follows a young girl named Nelay who has been born with the sight which allows her to see Fairies.
Although warned by her mother to avoid the fairies, while out with her father and brother, her father is bitten by a snake and lays in the sand dying, Nelay asks one of the fairies for help, setting off a chain of events that she never knew was possible.
All deals with the fairies come with a price, but will this price be too much for Nelay ,/stars

I really enjoyed Amber's Winter Queen, so I was really glad I received this novella for review, It is the prequel to Summer Queen, another book in the Fairy Queens' series, This short novella follows a young girl Nelay, Nelay has the gift of sight and can see fairies, However, she has been instructed never to let them know she can see them for bad things come to those who do,

At onlyyears old, Nelay lives a life of hardship in the desert, She uses her sight of the fairies to help her in times of need, but is careful never to let them know, She is resented by her older brother, as she is the one to earn praise from her family for finding water, I hated the way her brother treated her, He was a cruel boy but they are still family, which is why his hatred of her still hurts, After their father goes missing, it is up to them to try and find him, Nelay attracts the attention of a fairy and in a moment of desperate need, begs for help, Help is not free though and Nelay will make a promise that will definitely play a role in the next book,

I really liked Nelay's little character, She is strong and resilient she's had no other choice, It's all about survival for her, She does not fear the desert and what it has to offer, She only fears for her family's survival, She is still a caring little girl her hope and compassion haven't been stripped away by a hardened life,

Her brother makes a snide comment about how she will end up married and pregnant in the future and Nelay doesn't want that life for herself.
I am very interested to see how this will play out in the actual novel,

I really like Argyle's writing style and while there's not a ton of action going on in this one, it does give us a glimpse of the pain, heartbreak, and desperation Nelay has lived through as a child so we will see how this shapes her in the future.

Received a copy of this novella from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review, What a great way to introduce a setting and character, Nelay was a great protagonist, Strong and clever. Even atshe had the right personality for someone in a leadership position, Her parents seemed dense to her brother being a psycho towards her, I correctly guess what would happen to Nelay early on as making deals with supernatural beings to save a loved one usually makes you lose them in a different way but still great details in describing the world.
I was bemused that despite taking place in completely different landscape Nelays family was dependent on sheep just like Ilyenna's clan was, The fire goddess so revered is most certainly the summer queen, This stroy was like a tiny sliver of your favorite meal given to afterweeks of bland food, So good to eat but leaves you wanting more, Can't wait for summer queen, Of Fire and Ash is a novella in the Fairy Queens series, coming between Winter Queen and Summer Queen, It follows a young Nelay, before the events of the second book, and focuses on her journey into becoming a Priestess, Nelay is the daughter of a sheep farmers in a land where droughts are claiming their ability to make a living, One of
Snag Of Fire And Ash (Fairy Queens, #1.5) Narrated By Amber Argyle Expressed As Softcover
my favorite things about Ambers books are the images she paints for the scenery, I loved being able to visualize the dry land with its prickly scrub brush, and dangerous animals, Nelay is onlyyears old in this novella and Im already in awe of how strong she is, She carries a sling and a spear, and can use both, She is capable of hunting for herself and traversing the land alone, It really sets a precedent for what she will be like in Summer Queen, and I cant wait to see how shes grown up.
The story surrounding her family was sort of heartbreaking, and at other times increasingly frustrating, It does seem unlikely that they will make an appearance in the next book, but Im very curious to see how they are faring and what they think of Nelay in her new role.
The fae are watching, waiting, . .

As the drought worsens, it becomes harder and harder for Nelay not to use her forbidden sight to provide for her hungry family.
But when the worst happens, . .

Only Nelay's sight will allow her to save her family,

Now, Nelay has to be more careful than ever because if the fae realize she can see them nothing will stop them from claiming her for their dark purpose.

I loved Winter Queen and when I learned that there were going to be other books in the series, I couldnt wait to read them.
The wait for them has been longer than I thought it would be, Of Fire and Ash is a novella and it introduces us to the woman who will turn into the Summer Queen in the next novel.
Reading novellas is a little dissatisfying because they give you a taste of whats to come but they end far too soon, This novella was no different,

In Of Fire and Ash we meet Nelay, she lives in the dessert with her family: her father, mother and an elder brother.
They are going through a tough time because of the on going drought, There is hardly anything to eat and everyday, Nelay, her father and brother have to venture a little farther in order to look for water.
Though her family doesnt know, Nelay possesses the Sight, which allows her to see the fairies, When her father doesnt return after going in search for one of their missing sheep, she and her brother go looking for him and find that hes been bitten by a snake.
In order to save her fathers life, she makes a deal with a fairy and this marks a turning point in her life.

I love Argyles writing, her books immediately suck me in and the world comes alive, Even in this novella, I couldnt stop reading and found myself completely immersed in this world, This world came live with its harsh weather conditions, the unyielding desert and the many kinds of fairies around, All of these fairies were distinct both in temperament and appearance, Ideally, when you read a book it should draw in so that your own world falls away and that is precisely what happened when I read Of Fire and Ash.
I dont think Ive ever been so dissatisfied to see a book end, I wanted it to go on,

Nelay, the main character, is only nine but there was so much spunk and fire in her, She didnt know how to give up, she kept going, and trying to look for way out even everyone around her had given up hope.
I really admired her spirit and I can just see that shes going to grow up to be a strong and independent woman.

We meet her family as well and her parents genuinely seemed to care for her, But I hated her brother, he was a bully and I am happy that Nelay wont have to live with him, He was mean and violent,

Of Fire and Ash works like a teaser for the main attraction: Summer Queen, And if this novella is anything to go by, then Im sure that Summer Queen will be every bit as amazing as this book was.
I love this new world that Argyle has created and I cant wait to delve into it once more,

P. S But I have a few questions:

Does this take place in the same universe as Winter Queen

Is this a sequel or a prequel to Winter Queen

If they take place in the same universe and this a sequel, will Ilyenna and Nelay meet in Summer Queen Will we see Ilyenna in all her Winter Queen glory.
