on The History of Classical Music For Beginners

primer for anyone wanting to understand more about the history and cultural impact of Classical music, It's great for beginner like myself and those who play and sing not me who would like to becomemore familiar with things like: the significance and importance of the development of notation, it's growth within western civilization and the catholic church, its mathmatical foundations, the different composers and movements and more.

The writing style is accesible without being either too dumb downed or too caught up in jargon and terminology, And the illustrations are a perfect companion to the text, The book succeeds both in purpose and execution, I would like to check out more of the series,Stars.

Disclaimer: I received an Advanced Reader's Copy from the publisher through Goodreads, This is a goodreads firstread review,

I wanna say that I learned a lot from this book, but the truth is that I won't take away even a fraction of the knowledge that I should have learned from this book.
It shows the evolution of music while speaking of composers that people generally know, even if they aren't huge fans of "classical" music.
I can't say that I know the difference between Bach any of them or Mozart, or Stavinsky, or the difference between a motto mass, or a mass proper.
However, I thoroughly enjoyed the humor and the illustrations and the short chapters, I feel that this is a book that anyone at any age can get enjoyment and knowledge out of no matter their classical music love level.

Thanks guys, I'll keep my eyes open for more "for beginners" book, In order to fully understand the social and cultural impact of western music in todays society, we necessarily have to go back to ancient times and meticulously study from there the evolution of music, attributed to cultural and political

changes in past societies.

Although we constantly mistake “classical music” for all the music written previous to theth century, the book shows us that music has actually radically evolved from the firsts human civilizations, the medieval era, the baroque and romantic periods to the beginnings of thest century proving that “classical music” is not only a much broader term than we might think, but also an ever changing concept.

The book title speaks for itself, since the book is specifically written “for beginners”, This allows readers of all sorts regardless of their previous knowledge on the field to equally dive into the immense and fascinating world of “classical music”.

As its name suggests, the book is geared towards people with no prior knowledge of classical music and perhaps music in general.
It doesnt use any musical notations or technical analysis which could intimidate a novice and therefore is easy to get through and understand it on semantic level, but the problem is while one can almost fully understand the words he is saying, she/he may not get much of the quality of the vast different music they try to describe! It introduces a large and different variety of classical music in its general meaning as it evolved throughout centuries in a short volume without being able to clearly convey the elements of each to the reader unfamiliar to them.
Its almost like a book talking about the history of painting without actually showing images of each style and form! Its totally possible to only talk about realism, expressionism, naturalism, surrealism and but it wouldnt be much helpful for someone who never saw any of those paintings.
This issue is more noticeable in firstchapters before it shifts to later music of renaissance and baroque as music of those early periods might even not be easily accessible on internet.
For this, this book should have come with an audio CD or something, I give an example from chapter:
The French overture was marked by two distinct, repeated sections: the first was grand and majestic, homophonic and employing unequal rhythms that rushed to the downbeat the second section was faster and usually imitative like a fugue.

Did you understand it Yes! Could you imagine the different music kinds those adjectives and terms were describing Perhaps not! And I could draw lots of lines from the book like that.
At the end, music is an actual physical experience that is not translatable to words and reducible to terms and styles therefore this might be the shared issue of such books that try to depict the music for the beginners who never heard the pieces before.

From the other hand, the layout of the book in very short chapters has a positive side too as it gives a sense of rapid progression and fulfillment to the reader and might be a good strategy for an author if they feel fit for conveying the topics clearly in few pages without causing confusion and opaqueness.

All being said, this book still managed to keep my curiosity and special respect for this very unique realm of music.

While the ricercare will eventually fall out of fashion, the fugue will become an important staple of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and an inspiration for composers in the centuries to follow

The sonata was a very broadly used term in the seventeenth century, referring to virtually any composition for instruments,

“The Italian and French styles have long divided up the Republic of Music in France, As for me, I have always esteemed the things that deserved to be, without regard to the composer or nation, ”

Chap:
this chapter will focus exclusively on J, S. Bach and G. F Handel, whose music has endured for centuries and serve as the example against which many other composers and their works are measured.

composers in the Classical period realized that the emotional state was fluid, and thus a single movement of music could evoke a variety of emotions.
This is what paved the way for unexpected turns in the character of music in the Classical period,
The symphony was descendent of more than one instrumental genre, although it takes its name from the Italian sinfonia opera overture,

His unfinished Requiem has long been shrouded in mystery and legend,
