Starts off with a trapper wondering what has happened to a family of beavers because he sees several derelict lodges, Then it goes on to fill in the blanks of what happened by following the journey of a young black beaver, whose life is automatically more full of peril because the colour of his pelt is rarer and more desired.
The ending made me cry, and that is all I will say, This was the abridged version, and it was so eloquent, I can't even fathom just how excellent the unabridged version might be.
