This book has been out for over a year, Over a year! I even read it as soon as it came out, and yet it has taken all this time to share my thoughts on it.

Reading “Secret Medicines from Your Garden” makes you feel like the author is personally leading you on a wilderness adventure, Hopman regales you with anecdotes from her spiritual journey and herbalism training, She doesnt just tell you about herbs and their meanings and uses, she trains you to intuit a plants purpose, Not only do you learn about the physical natural world, but Hopman discusses plant spirits, herbal astrology, and more, Of
course the book is filled with ways to use all that nature has to offer such as poultices, tinctures, and food,
I would say “Secret Medicines from Your Garden” is a surprisingly engaging book, and I dare say its my favorite of all of Ellen Evert Hopmans books.
And considering how many great books shes written, thats saying something, Good info Every now and again I come across a book which I know will become favourite resource, one that will live on my bookcase, one I will reach out for on numerous occasions, one that will never be leant out to anyone in case I were to lose it.

This is not a traditional herbal encyclopaedia by any means, for unlike others this is topic based, Plants frequently appear in one section of the book only to pop up again in another, showing us a different side to them, one that may be overlooked by others.
Sections of the book teach us about working with the signatures of plant, seasonal herbs, the invisible dimensions of the plant world and ways we can make use of plants in our own lives.
Throughout her book Hopman provides us with a real treasure chest of information, wisdom, both modern and traditional, recipes, remedies, potions, tinctures, teas and more besides.
Ellen Evert Hopman is someone with an eclectic background, interested in many things who is both a herbalist and a Druid, In Secret Medicines from your Garden we benefit from this diverseness, for because of it, she is able to open up the world of plants to us in both a practical and very spiritual way.
This book is both really enjoyable to read and will be a great reference book for how to create formulas and plant energetics, Secret Medicines From Your Garden is packed with information from recognizing plants based upon shape of stems, leaves and growing conditions to using those plants.
One section of this book is broken down to individual plants and the growing seasons of Spring, Summer and Fall, The plants and what portions are used are discussed along with a "recipe", Another section is recipes for various aliments and needs, Throughout the book, the connection to the physical plant and a spiritual healing is linked,
Beyond the amazing discourse on the plants and their healing or home uses, Ellen Evert Hopman concentrates on sharing the spiritual or "magic" associated with these plants.
Having studied Druid and American Indian herbalism, Ms, Hopman strongly influences her book with the idea of healing body and mind with plants, This is defiantly a way of life that is being introduced and explained to the reader,

An informative and comprehensive guide to herbs and their uses as medicines for everyday use, Altogether, this would not be my goto herb guide, as it does not include any planting/growing techniques or information, But as another herbal resource book, it is invaluable, Making tinctures for health and enjoyment, How to's, recipes, lore and more, I received this book in the mail from Healing Arts Press, I was expecting your run of the mill herb book where they talk about a small selection of herbs that you can grow in your garden.
Surprisingly, this had more to offer, This is the first work I've read of Ellen Evert Hopman and it certainly will not be the last, It begins with a backstory of the author, You get to learn where she is coming from with her knowledge of plants, It's interesting to see how someone's journey takes place as they travel down their chosen path, Through the book, Ellen teaches you how to identify plants and their properties just from look, You learn how to “read” the herbs, so to speak, There are tons of little tricks and tips to start you on the path of herbology, She includes charts that show which herbs are best for particular ailments, charts that tell you thermal and moisture properties, and ailments that those herbs can be applied to.
Formulas and recipes are scattered throughout, Hopman took her time with this book and it definitely shows that she worked to get it right, It is perfect for the learned and novice herbalist alike, I really loved it! This is a great reference book and one I will be using a lot from now on, There are lots of recipes and the vintage prints of the plants make this a very special book, What makes this book really unique and sets it apart from other herbal medicine books is that the author included how to intuit a plant's properties, the triangle formula making, herbal lore, mystical folklore and modern research as well as shamanic plant and animal spirit medicine.
