Retrieve Aquaman, Vol. 4: Echoes Of A Life Lived Well Scripted By Kelly Sue DeConnick Contained In Version
afsluiter Aquaman's current run ends with a wedding and Ocean Master making another play for Atlantis, The addition of Aquababy actually worked pretty well, giving Arthur and Mera some proud parent moments to shine, DeConnick did a good job of extending what Dan Abnett started with his Game of Thrones approach to Atlantis, while adding her own unique touches as well like the old Gods of the sea.
A solid finish to DeConnick's run on Aquaman,
While I understand it isn't always possible, I love it when the author is able to give the characters a bit of a nice sendoff.
You know it's not the end, but it has that happily ever after feel that lets you feel like you could just stop here if you wanted to not that I ever would.
Because comics.
This fight for the throne of Atlantis has been in the making for quite some time now, and I'll be honest, I really didn't think it would end this way.
But I liked it all the same, and think that it was a nice way to shake things up for the underwater kingdoms,
Without giving anything away, I can say that I loved not only the main storyline but also the side plots, Characters like Aqualad, the sea gods, amp Dolphin were just as much fun to read about as Arthur amp Mera, The conclusion was satisfying and the buildup to said conclusion was interesting,
In fact, the entire run felt both fresh and familiar and left me with zero complaints,
Fechou bem a série,.Stars DeConnick's run is easily one of my favorite Aquaman runs, Should be on every DC fan's to do list, This is how a multi book comic run should end, You get loose threads tied up and you create possibilites for the next team to try on,
Aqualad learns more about his past and tries to step forward into the future cue up the Aqualad book ideas,
Black Manta still thinks the world is a mess and he should rule it drhorriblediditfirst
Mera and Arthur get a resolution to her run as Queen of Atlantis.
Ocean Master is still a pompous jerkface neverchange
Old Gods shake off the dust and DO something not sure if i'll miss these guys
This was a great conclusion to the run.
Atlantis 'will never be the same again', Hahahahaha. It was fine.
On to the next aquaventures of Arthur, Mera, and family!
As a Dad to two small girls I love seeing this in my superhero books, not going to lie.
. . Aquababy is here, but all is not well, Mera's wedding must go on, and Ocean Master has something to say about that, When allout war sweeps the Seven Seas, Jackson Hyde finds himself trapped in Xebel on an errand for his father, And then, as if that wasn't enough, the finale!
Kelly Sue DeConnick has had great success on Aquaman if you ask me, manipulating the underwater politics of Atlantis as well as feeding off of the Ocean Master stories that have recently gone before it to put Arthur's brother in the position he finds himself in here.
It all feels very satisfying, like the long end to a long run, andissues in the current comic climate is that and more,
The two issue interlude by Jordan Clark midway through is also impressive if a bit of a momentum killer when reading the story in trade, since it completely diverts the attention away from Mera and Arthur for two issues, but it's a good little story that again feeds nicely off of the Black Manta stories that have been shaping Jackson since he appeared in Rebirth without treading on familiar territory.
The artwork here is predominantly Miguel Mendonca, who proved himself an able fillin artist for me over on Rebirth's Nightwing series, Regular artist Robson Rocha starts us off strong before disappearing, while Marco Santucci pops in for the two issue Aqualad story, Santucci gives me Dale Eaglesham vibes, which is high praise from me,
Aquaman's adventures have come to an end for now, but there's a sense of finality here that I really like, The story is over, but Aquaman, Mera, Andy, Jackson, and friends' lives have all entered a new phase which will no doubt bring them back to our pages soon enough.
This was a pretty good volume with a nice ending, that shows there can deff be more, but you can also stop here, I love Mera and Arthur as a couple, they are very supportive and caring to each other, I also like how when they have a bad day, they do fight but they always come back together,
Andy was soooo cute as well! I really loved seeing more of Jackson in this as well, he's quite an interesting character and I look forward to seeing how he grows.
Such a great end to her run!
I loved the continuation of the story where Mera is a queen and Arthur plus the gain raise Andi.
The epidemic in Atlantis felt eerily parallel to the current covidsituation even though this was released in, Arthur remains as cheerful as possible when visiting Mera while she is in a coma I admired that, The art was awesome and I would highly recommend to read in physical form or on a big tablet so you can see the full page and double page spreads.
I loved how Arthur supports Mera as a leader rather than over shadow her, He has confidence in her being able to handle herself and how empowering is that
I dont think we see pregnant queens or queens raising children or queens period in graphic novels.
I liked how Mera understood that the monarchy and old ways to running Atlantis are not working and she wants to change it, Of course, Orm comes in to stir trouble as usual,
I was getting found family vibes too which I love as a trope,
I began this series not expecting much but it was very enjoyable, This was a solid ending to what turned out to be a very good Aquaman series, Most of the plotlines got resolved and we got a rare definitive ending, Of course, this is comics, so a definitive ending only lasts until the next volume starts,
The run conclude, with a volume that's rather better than its predecessor and for that matter, better than the conclusion to Abnett's run a couple of year's prior.
It's all based around Mera's grand state wedding, Given that Arthur isn't the groom and that this is the kind of story it is, it's unsurprising when all hell breaks loose in front of the altar and nothing goes as planned.
However, there are some good scenes with Aquaman leading up to the wedding, seeing him trying to cope with his new daughter, There's also some character development for Black Manta's son, which was also one of the good features of the previous volume, and the action scenes, both at the wedding and elsewhere, are done well.
Orm is suitably villainous, trying to take advantage of an epidemic to appear as a man of the people, and a host of other familiar characters popping in for the climax and it's great to see Dolphin, once again, being a key element in the resolution.
In the end, it's a new beginning for Atlantis and for the core characters with a resolution that's rather more positive than one might expect, given some other DC arcs of late.
Aquaman finishes strong with Kelly focusing on family,
With Arthur first mission to rescue his daughter the mission goes in directions I didn't expect and keeps it highly entertaining, The next two arcs play next to each other and I have to say I was shocked how much I enjoyed Kaldur'ahm this arc and his mission with both his grandfather and then his asshole father.
The story ends on a wedding, so it was really nice,
Overall pretty solid sendoff, Not amazing but really enjoyable, Kelly really turned it around as I hated volume, enjoyed volumeanda lot, andas well, I also thought art worked well and got to let a few characters that were in the shadows to shine, This is the end for Aquaman for awhile but it worked out well, We all new where it was headed, but I enjoyed the journey nonetheless, The rating might be a little high, but I really feel that DeConnick deserve a lot of credit for the work she has done with this title's characters since she took over.
I think this is her last issue, and she ties up the big plot lines in a very satisfying manner for me,
Let's be honest, The majority of DC Comics' big name characters areyears old, To try and make them work in today's world, and offer a new spin on things takes both hard work and talent, During her run here DeConnick helped make Amnesty Bay and its inhabitants an important character comic reference point see Opal City and Starman, She created a new pantheon, one that I would not object if she decided to try and take these beings and Amnesty Bay and turn it into a new series.
The major plot threads are wrapped up, Mera takes a look at where Atlantis' government has failed some portions of the realm and makes changes, Arthur has a final battle with Ocean Master, Dolphin and Pilot, while supporting characters, have important moments too,
Look this is a corporation's IP, These changes will last until the next movie or two months from now with the next big "event", Look this is a pretty good run by DeConnick, but you can read this final volume alone, IMO, and come away with a smile for getting a good story and an.
. ending ehno major spoilers for what I read as digital floppies,
