Almost two years after her sisters death, Leannan ONeal feels the loss of Serena more now than ever, A secret meeting between them before she died left Lea with an ugly figurine and nothing but questions, Hangup calls at work and a trashed house reminds her of the card Serena gave her, “If you find yourself in trouble, go to him and only him” were the last words her sister spoke to her,
With Smthye out for revenge and hot on her heels, Lea goes on the run in search of Serenas Angel, but how long can Gabe keep her alive, and is the cost worth more than her life good book The rapid action of “Lethal Weapon” meets the telepathic plane of the “Ghost Whisperer” comes together in “To Take up the Sword”, the second book in Brynna Currys Elemental Magic series from Lyrical Press.
Curry creates a hero and heroine that the reader becomes instantly enamored of, and at every nail biting moment wants the couple to make it.
In Book Two, FBI agent Serena Roarke is dead, killed by Niccolo Gueraldis henchman Ashton Smythe who is recently acquitted of Serenas murder.
Before Serena is killed, she gives her sister Leannan ONeal a Madonna figurine and warns her sister to keep it with her every minute of the day.
She also gives Lea the business card of her partner Gabriel Spiller, and tells her to go to him if her life is ever in danger.
Leas life is threatened shortly after Smythes acquittal, Knowing Serena stole the diamonds he smuggled for Gueraldi, Smythe sends a retinue of gunmen on the trail of Serenas sister Lea who has a direct line of communication with her deceased sister via a telepathic plane.
Its Serenas voice that guides Lea to safety and into Gabes arms literally with the Madonna figurine in her possession, Together, Gabe and Lea discover the contents of the statue are stolen diamonds needed for the case against Smythe,
The intricacies in the story such as the back story on Serena and Gabes partnership and the relationship Lea had with her sister and father, who were both cops, makes these characters exist in real time.
The progression of the story happens rapidly including the romantic connection between Gabe and Lea, which doesnt give the characters much of a chance to savor the passion that ignites between them.
The story keeps the reader pinned to the pages and gasping at every twist, which Curry puts in quite a few adding more layers to the plot.
“To Take up the Sword” shows Curry is a voice for what could be happening right now someplace in real time, Her attention to crafting a suspenseful plot projects the intensity in works by David Baldacci and her insight into romantic entanglements shows a perception reminiscent of Danielle Steele.
This was a great followup and a short, easy read, It took me about two hours to read from start to finish, and even if it had of taken longer, Im not sure I could have put it down.
This second volume in the Elemental Magic series ties up a lot of loose ends while bringing us another beautiful love story that has an incredible swoonworthy ending.
