Herbert has written some of the greatest horror stories of the lastyears, The Rats, The Jonah, The Survivor and lots of them became films too, Notably The Survivor with Robert Powell and Jenny Agutter, Having read this one, with its WWsetting l feel this too deserves to be adapted into a movie, The premise is brilliant and believable and the characters too are well researched, Come on somebody, turn this into the movie it deserves to be, First of all let me say how much I loved the setting in this book: silent and almost empty London in, three years after Hitler's ultimate biological weapon extinguished almost all life on Earth, leaving buildings intact.
Only a handful of people survived, and they are either sick or crazy or both, Among the ghostly remnants of civilization, a group of fascist bad guys Blackshirts is trying to round up all uninfected humans, including our superhero, the American pilot named Hoke, and steal their blood in a desperate attempt to cure themselves.

Hoke is going through this novel like a character from Half Life, running, jumping, riding bikes, cars and boats, fighting, shooting, and killing dozens of Blackshirts, and suffering only minor injuries in the process.
But that's kind of ok because he is immune to the disease that made his enemies slower and weaker, almost decomposing, Still the numerical odds are against him, so Hoke needs not one, not two, . . but at least six miracle saves from mortal danger, before he can finally annihilate the bad guys, get the girl, and lead a group of survivors to better tomorrow.
Hell yeah!

'is a fast paced novel that is easy to read, has simple black and white characters, interesting idea and setting, but it does not work well at all if you try to use your brain too much while reading.
Well this book earns a solid soso rating, What an intriguing premise. InHitler unleashes a devastating biological suicide weapon killing a huge portion of the Human race, Taking everybody with him as Nazi Germany goes down the drain, When the story begins it's three years later and our protagonist an American pilot is living in London now a gigantic mausoleum and being chased by British Nazis who believe that his blood can save them.
A few survivors are immune while others are dying more slowly, Our hero meets up with four other immunes and the chase is on, If ever a book screamed to be made into a movie this one is it, It's a classic action novel with pages of drawn out setpieces supported by elaborate descriptions of the physical structure of a postapocalyptic London, Another reviewer compares the novel to the video game "HalfLife" which is spoton sorry too much BBC,

However what would be a great setup for a video game, graphic novel or a movie doesn't work so well for a novel, Pages and pages of highspeed pursuits and one cliffhanger after another isn't so effective when it's in writing, Actually it becomes repetitive and stale after a couple hundred pages, I skimmed the last third of the novel and didn't miss anything since there was nothing to miss,

I'm giving this book two because it wasn't a piece of garbage, Mr. Herbert was an old pro who understood how to write, It's obvious that he did his research and there was nothing amateurish about his work, but in this case it just wasn't that interesting, I'm a big fan of both the alternativehistory and postapocalyptic genres, When I learned about ' I was eager to read it, Seemed like a certain slamdunk, but it isn't, Just goes to show that even the best of writers can sometimes have downtimes and even the best of ideas might not translate very well into writing, I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and it contains an awesome fight scene! I struggled to finish this book abandoning it twice before reaching the somewhat flat and disappointing ending.
Blood and gore feature quite heavily in here, as you would expect in a James Herbert novel, but not enough of a story to keep my attention, That said, I enjoyed backdrop of a war ravaged London, Im not sure where to start with this book, Its post war with some post apocalyptic overtones thrown in for good measure, Its hard to know where the book starts and finishes, The middle part is full action but it didnt grab me I buddyread this book with mum after finishing Wilde Like Me, in the hopes that we could get into James Herbert, and I am really glad to say that I enjoyed this so much more than Creed.
Whilst the protagonist did also suffer from behaving inappropriately towards female characters in this story, I felt he was more fleshed out as a character and we generally more enjoyable to read.

Starting with the protagonist, I really appreciated how much agency he had throughout the book, I really preferred how Hoke was so proactive and took charge of each situation that he was in, rather than just letting the action and plot frag him around throughout the story.
Similarly, it felt like his desires and actions played a significant part in driving the plot, rather than bumbling along and letting things just happen to him, which kept me much more engaged.

I also liked the other characters that were featured in this book, They werent exactly perfect, largely playing on stereotypes of different groups in that period, but they were varied and developed enough for me to feel somewhat invested in what happened to them.
I liked how each of them being so different affected the way they interacted with oneanother and how individual relationships developed, as well as the group as a whole.
The only frustrations I had with the relationships was how both women were instantly attracted to the protagonist, as it seemed to only serve male readers who were projecting themselves onto Hoke, rather than him being attractive.
This is particularly annoying in the beginning when he is so rude and hostile to the girls and the other members of their party, I also didnt like that Hoke hated Stern so much just because he was German, and got so frustrated at little things like his accent, only for them both to suddenly crave mutual respect from the other.
I didnt mind that there was growth in the relationship, I just didnt like that it was so sudden and seemed unjustified, as it felt forced,

I also liked the general premise of the alternate history where the Nazis won, and the fallout was so severe that civilisation collapses, This creates in interesting world for the characters to have to navigate, especially with the added danger of being hunted by other factions,

My main issue with this book was the descriptions, I found there were several times while listening to this book that I often zoned out because descriptions of the landscapes, or the places they were going, or the guns they were using went into so much detail that seemed so pointless.
There was also a fair amount of times where Herbert used the same adjectives or similes to describe several different things throughout the book, This was particularly bad when he was talking about Hoke reading other peoples expressions or bodylanguage, It felt like he couldnt think of more than one way to describe how someone looked frightened, so he had to do it in the same way each time something scary happened.

Overall, I thought this book was pretty good! I enjoyed the characters and the plot to consider reading another James Herbert book! James Herbert transcends the horror medium with ', a blistering tale of postWorld War II London overrun with fear and blood.
Delivering not only terrifying imagery, but pulsepounding action and historical adventure, it is destined to become a classic, It is a London Too Terrifying to Imagine, Already crippled by the relentless Nazi bombing, this oncebeautiful city has been depopulated by a hideous blood plague unleashed in the final convulsive collapse of the German regime, Now, human vampires wander the rubblestrewn streets, desperately searching for the only thing that can cure them, . .

But not all survivors have been afflicted, and Hoke a lone hero accompanied only by his trusty dog and bitter memories is relentlessly pursued for the clean blood that courses through his veins.
Yet his flight soon takes on a different meaning as he saves two women and a former German soldier, Banding together, they flee into the city's underground tunnels where an unexpected betrayal that delivers them right into the hands of their deadly adversaries prompts Hoke to take a stand against these monsters once and for all.

"With ', James Herbert delivers another triumphant thriller that blends twofisted action with the supernatural", Douglas E. Winter Id been reluctant to read this book as Herberts stories are usually supernatural or occult in nature, and thats a subject that appeals to me, However, since Ive read all his others, and I couldnt believe Herbert could disappoint, I picked this up, It is definitely his most mainstream of books, but still contains plenty of gruesome imagery the rotting piles of dead in London, the effects of the blood death, It's set in an “alternate”in which Hitler killed off most of Britain with a biological weapon, One thing thats obvious is that theres very little plot to this book, its a straightup action movie of a story, with an allAmerican hero with some belated character colouring and a group of survivors.
It could easily make an exciting Hollywood action film, I didn't find it very satisfying, However, with Herberts usual cool, sharp, pacy prose, it was one I still finished quickly,

In, Hitler unleashed the Blood Death on Britain as his final act of vengeance, Those who died at once were the lucky ones, The really unfortunate took years, The survivors people like me, who had the blood group that kept us safe from the disease were now targets for those who believed our blood could save them.

This one was a real surprise, as of writing this review I have read every Herbert book and I'm just finishing off "Ash", But my journey has been an odd one, you see his first few books I

enjoyed and I loved his "Rats trilogy" even if the second book was a bit pants, therd capped it off perfectly, there was even a surprise of his book "Fluke" about a man who reincarnated into a dog and his journey.
But something happened in thes and didn't end until the middles, Herbert started to write only about psychics and that's where he lost me, all his books and characters started to converge and feel the same and I was bored on this rocky journey.
And then finally my hope was revived when i found this book, The story moves away from his old trend and goes the direction of Stephen king, telling a story of a virus sent over to london and Europe inby Hitler as a last ditch attempt to watch the other nations crumple so his empire of only the worthy can rule.
The story is fascinating and so are the characters, as they try to survive in a ruined and decaying london, where those that are alive either hide in fear from the still recurring blitz or the black coats, a group of survivors who are slowly dying and see the blood of the fit to save them.
The characters and world really keep you hooked and it was a shame to see it end, as this is more of what i wanted to see from Herbert, what I knew he had in him, when he moved away from psychics! Sadly this wasn't to last as after this he went right back to form, with his last book being "Ash" that carries on his David ash story and the psychic ghost haunting.
His sadly gone now, so I can't hope for another "" style book, but I'm glad I got to experience this one near to the end, So consider this the end of my journey with Herbert, it was an interesting one, not always good, but he was a fantastic writer who just lost his way, but found his way back near to the end.
And to me that's a very heart warming end to a bumpy ride,
