This story brings a whole new perspective to what we have thought of her through the years it brings her to life with everyday accounts, It was very interesting to see the types of activities she would have done on a daily basis and to "see" her village through her eyes, Get to know Pocahontas in a new light by following her through her daytoday activities in her village, and as she interacts with her friends and relatives.
It amazes me to imagine what life would be like during that period in time, It was definitely a different, dangerous and intriguing era, A very compelling look into one of America's heroic woman in history and the life that she possibly led, I loved this book and I'm looking forward to Part Two,
Note: Sexual content moderate
Thank you to Paula Margulies and Goodreads for a free copy of this book, This review is my personal opinion of the book "Favorite Daughter, Part One", Pocahontas was one of my favorite heroines growing up, as my ancestry carries Native American blood, Her bravery and perseverance through what must have been a nightmare at times is not only heartbreaking, its inspiring,
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel! The author has done a wonderful job of bringing this extraordinary character to life, in a manner thats believable, The research invested is evident, and shines through with every turn of the page, Although a work of fiction, I found this to be the most intimate and realistic portrayal of Pocahontas to date,
I received a copy of this wonderful novel in exchange for an honest and unscripted review,

When I was little Pocahontas was one of my favorite Disney movies, if Im honest it still is.
Her story has always intrigued me, A young Native American girl that saved the life of an intruder, In this book I finally got to know more about her in a fun way, Favorite Daughter tells the story of Pocahontas early life, her transformation from childhood into adulthood,
The story begins when John Smith and his men have arrived in America, Pocahontas is immediately fascinated by the group of strangers, There are different than anyone she has ever seen, But some of her fathers advisors dont share her fascination, after all they could for a threat to their tribe, Pocahontas was a fascinating character to follow, Shes a very strongwilled young girl, She loves her home but she also longs for adventure, to discover something new, Her curiousness makes her sometimes lose objectiveness, But she still cares about her fathers advice and she always takes it into consideration, It is clear that Pocahontas is a born leader,
The setting of Pocahontass tribe is really beautiful, Its a real shame that so much of it has disappeared, But it is clear that the author took her time to investigate the Native American culture, She described their habits and language well, It was fascinating to see how she makes their world come alive,
Overall I really enjoyed reading this book, Favorite Daughter, Part One is story about love, honor, respect and family, I cant wait to read the second part in this series, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction and who is interested in the Native American culture,
.
This historical novel tells though first person narrative the story of a young Pocahontas and her tribe as they try to decide whether or not they should help the white settlers who are struggling to adapt to the new world.
Her uncle doesn't think they should and when they capture John Smith he believes they should kill him, Pocahontas on the other hand quickly forms a friendship with him tries to convince her father he deserves to be spared, It was clear the author did plenty of research on the language and customs which I really appreciate and I liked the wide range of characters and the way it described what her day to day life would have been like.
I guess my only complaint is when it came to her feelings for Smith the whole thing felt a bit jumbled and confused and just plain strange but overall it was a nice enjoyable quick read.
The legend of Pocahontas is most wellknown as an Indian princess who saved the life of an Englishman, John Smith, who was an Indian hostage, Her story was first written by John Smith and has been romanticized through generations, The most popular version of the story is the Disney movie, Pocahontas released in, However, Paula Marguliess Favorite Daughter, Part One tells the legend of Pocahontas from the Native American perspective, In this story the tale is retold by Pocahontas herself as she tells her side of events of the time when John Smith and his crew first settled in America.
The story starts when John Smith has landed in America and formed Jamestown, Pocahontas and her people are fascinated by these mysterious men whom they have never seen before, When John Smith is suddenly taken hostage by her people, Pocahontas becomes attracted to him and wants to learn more about him, Slowly, John Smith and Pocahontas form a slow friendship and together they teach their language and customs to each other, There, Pocahontas embarks on a mission of peace between the English and her tribe,
I found the setting of Pocahontass tribe to be very beautiful, It is clear that the author understands a lot about Native American culture for she writes it eloquently by describing their customs and language, I was fascinated with how she makes their world come alive, I also liked how she portrayed Jamestown, as a town that is starving and does not have enough supplies to survive, Yet, some of these men, like John Smith, are interested in the Native American language and customs and would like to make an alliance with them,
What I found most fascinating was Pocahontas, She is a strongwilled person, who loves her home and respects nature, She is a bit tomboyish and adventurous, She is curious about not only the English settlers, but their home, She wants to go to England and see what it is like, She is also selfless and is willing to give up her life to save John Smith, She is also a woman of influence because her father listens to her advice and follows it, It is clear that Pocahontas is a leader and she never stops working on her mission to make peace with the English,
Overall, the themes of this book are about family, love, honor, and sacrifice, It is about a womans neverending quest for peace, This book shows what a strong person Pocahontas really was, I cant wait to read Favorite Daughter, Part Two, which comes out in July, I recommend this book to anyone interested not only in one of Americas first leading woman, but also to those interested in learning about Native American culture.
Note: This book was given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review, Written by my friend. I enjoyed! As a native woman, I was curious to see how the author would portray Pocahontas much less attempt to speak for her, I was pleasantly surprised. The historical research Paula Margulies conducted has been intertwined with storytelling so that the reader first meets the young child, Matoaka, who is also known as Amonute and finally Pocahontas.
Pushing the Disney stereotype aside, the reader is able to see the world as Pocahontas would have seen it, her curiosity about the strange looking people and concern for their wellbeing.
I was fortunate to have received an advance reader copy ARC from the publisher and I am looking forward to reviewing Part Two, I think the subject matter is intriguing and I enjoyed becoming immersed in the Native Americans'at least this tribe'sway of living, But I grew tired of some things,
I'm not a big fan of present tense, I've been able to enjoy it in the past, but the book has to grip me so strongly that I can ignore the present tense and that just didn't happen.
I found Pocahontus's obsession with "Chonsmit" weird to the point it made me uncomfortable, A young girl's infatuation Lust I'm guessing he's much older than her and this just bothered me, especially when she thought of him while lying with her beau.
I was confused about what exactly she was feeling for Smith, But then I'm not sure she knew either, All I can is I just plain found it disturbing to the point it began ruining the story for me, I was rolling my eyes and scoffing and just wanting her to stop it already,
My last quibble is at times I found the book too descriptive and wordy, I could skim an entire paragraph or two and not miss anything important,
I enjoyed parts of it too though, don't get me wrong, I liked reading about the customs of the tribe, their ways, their warriors, and just the history of white man coming and bothering them, I also liked Pocahontus's characterexcept for her weird Chonsmit obsession, I'd have preferred less of that and more of her awkward romance with her warrior, That seemed more realistic to me, especially with her being at such a young, confused age, I also liked the relationship she has with her father,
But overall, this just wasn't my thing, I received “First Daughter, Part” through the Goodreads First Reads program, When it arrived in the mail, my preschoolaged daughter was captivated by the cover as was I, and she asked what the book was about, I told her its about Pocahontas and asked if she knew who Pocahontas was, She said, “Yes, she married Prince John, ” As I thought about it, thats about all I knew about Pocahontas, too, So, while I was already interested in this novel, I was even more excited to dive into the book to learn more about her,
We definitely do get to know Pocahontas in this welldone, meticulously researched book, The writing style is so pleasant and flows so smoothly, it is easy to be absorbed into Pocahontas world, The abundant detail about daily life for the Powhatan people is skillfully weaved into the book, and I felt like I was there in theth Century watching the events take place in person.
I very much enjoyed the character of Pocahontas, Margulies has created a character who is passionate, intelligent and thoughtful, Accompanying Pocahontas as she works through questions of love, loss, loyalty, friendship and duty is a wonderful journey, But the fact shes flawed makes her such a realistic character, Legends arent typically remembered for their flaws, but since Pocahontas was a real person, she surely had them, And in this book, she struggles with jealousy, guilt and other real, human issues that make her likeable and believable, I not only liked Pocahontas, I respected her and her honesty, concern for others and bravery, Shes someone I enjoyed getting to know,
The book has plenty of action and moves at a quick pace, The book begins with Pocahontas coming of age her birth is discussed in the books introduction and covers about a year of her life, Its fascinating to see history practically come alive as we meet John Smith, see the European settlers and the Powhatan people brave nature and the elements while they learn to be neighbors or perhaps not.
All the while, we see Pocahontas deal with matters of the heart, family politics and a shocking sequence of events that leads to a devastating loss,
I anxiously look forward to Partwhen it comes out, I cant wait to see what happens, to learn more about this interesting time and place in our history and to spend more time with Pocahontas, Frankly, Partcant be released quickly enough, Im dying to know what happens!,
