What We Talk About When We Talk AboutLove is a superb work by Raymond Carver sitelink blogspot. com/w only Nathan Englander has Anne Frank in the titlehowever, this note will refer to the Peep Show and eventually, one or a couple of more stories from the aforementioned short story collection, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in

At the start of the narrative, Allen Fein has trouble with his shoes a five hundred dollars investment we find for he has stubbed his toe, somewhere nearnd Street come to think of it, does he mention where this is, do we all know it should be New York, with the way they have numbers, instead of names for their streets and avenues in an area where he used to walk as a young man, when his name was Ari Feinberg
The fact that he changes his name will come up through the story, when one of the rabbis at thePeep Show will more or less indict him, and indeed, it is symptomatic of a schism, a rupture, the fact that our hero had broken with his pastas we will discover, it is not so easy, if even feasible, to break with the past, since it stays with you and it may even come to haunt you when you indulge in sexual fantasies

His Blond, pregnant, beautiful, loving, Gentile wife is waiting at home and our main character is thinking lovingly about her ostensibly, this is the idea, albeit since he will go to a Peep Show, we could perhaps cancel the notion that he loves his spouse, not in the Thomas Mann sense anyway the great German novelist has a short story from where we get the concept that love as we have it defined in dictionaries can be found only in art, literature especially since he also mentions how far the woman is from understanding the Jewish religionfor the commemoration of his late father, she buys a candle with Jesus on it and then when challenged on the issue, she says that maybe he can turn Jesus toward the wall
A man is advertising live girls inside, a spherical show, the only one around with this sort of perspective and Allen aka Ari walks inside, pays five dollars, though the ad says a quarter with a much stronger buying power then and that is because he is ashamed to ask for change to a five dollar bill, for the dollar that is asked and therefore now has five tokens to usehe will need them, though not for the expected girls show

There are four women on the stage, almost naked, one with just a bra, another with panties and the fourth, counterintuitively or is it absurdly reading a book, with her glasses onthe one that he is enthused by is the first in lineThe girl is perfection and Allen wants her desperately.
. . he wants to cry

He remembers when he was a boy and coming to these shows he feared he will freeze and drop deadback then, there was a glass partition which is gone now and the girls invite clients to Touch and he can see the others, one of them is masturbating and another is about to have his world of dreams cracked open
Allen himself is going through a transformation and he feels he would sacrifice the outside world for this girl, he is a different man and thenhe sees three rabbis he used to know, Rifkin, Wolf and ZeitlerWolf in particular will engage in a surreal dialogue with the one he calls Ari and who in turn states that it was because of them that he had abandoned religion, for they had promised heaven and then they left their students to find that they will actually end up in hella story comes to mind, that of three boys that are together when one of them accidentally pees over the head of a rabbithey are all punished, beaten severely and then one of the innocents says enough with your dogmas, go to hell

Sister Hills
This is a story that starts in, near Jerusalem, on two Sister Hills, where Hanan Cohen lives in a one room shack with Rena, his wife, and their three boys on one of the hills and Skote lives with his wife, Yehudit, and their baby daughterthey have no running water, electricity and the radio signal is absorbed by the mountains in large part and what remains is annihilated by the treesthe two families have come to settle here, in what they see as part of ancient territory of Israel, right near an Arab village

The war breaks out and Hanan and his three sons go to war, where the father would be killed and then celebrated as a hero, and while they are gone, Rena is starting to cut down a tree, only to be interrupted from an Arab boy who says that if she will continue, he will make her pay for itlater there would be an Intifada and the Arabs from the village will fight with the Israelis and in the combat, the middle son of Rena will diein the night, Yehudit, her neighbor, comes with her very sick baby girl and she is so desperate as to have nothing else left but use superstition to save her daughter who looks like she will die.

Yehudit says that there is a tradition and that if she sells her child to Rena, then the spirits or demons will lose their way and the intention they have of taking the infant away might be stopped and the reluctant neighbor eventually accepts a trade she was skeptical of, on condition that Yehudit will take care of the girl and raise her to be a womaneventually, the eldest son of Rena is killed in the war, the middle one in the Intifada and she has only one left, who dies metaphorically when he decides to abandon his religion.

Tzuki this is what we called an uncle of mine is gay and with that, he is the opposite of his mother, who is Ultraorthodox as one joke has it in the story that gives the name to the collection, one could think of a detergent Ultraorthodox for you, cleaning all and so they are very far apart, but when he too dies, run over

by a car speeding atkilometers an hour, Rena goes to Yehudit to claim her right over her daughter, that is the one she had boughtyears agoAheret, and they have to come in front of the rabbinical court to decide on that
This is one cut from the life of someone who longs for something.
Quite enjoyable for the short journey it presents, A Vintage Shorts “Short Story Month” Selection
