a brief summary of the book is that research is ongoing, there is some hope, but do not expect any treatment in the very near future, meanwhile eat healthy and exercise.
Overall, it is a very good book for understanding the process of aging, Delves into scientific evidence and provides good description of the most recent developments, However, do not expect it to give you any valuable practical advice apart from you already probably know: you need eat healthy, do not smoke, exercise etc, Some medical experience here. And a longstanding interest in longevity medicine, This book is laughably bad, Who in their sane mind would want to readpages about the science of ageing,
where the only brief chapter on how to "live longer for better" details the usualorthings you have all known before you even picked this book up.
Unless you have been illiterate up until now, and also avoided all the general discourse of our culture on the radio and in the news, you will know that there are a few things that keep you healthy.
And it is the these things and these things only which form the concousion the PURPOSE if you will of reading this book, The author confirms they know of only the following ways to extend healthy human lifespan,Don't smokeEat a broadly healthy diet with less processed foodExcercise a bitGethours a sleep a night is good for your brain, That's it! That is All that is offered, Which is absurd on two fronts:EVERYONE KNOWS THIS alreadyIt is wholly inaccurate as an account of the current state of longevity medicine and WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW TO increase your odds of being healthier in old age.
There are brilliant breakthroughs being made every month, and at time of writing inwe have remarkably good bets to place in areas such a Mitochondrial energy support, Autophagy, reducing AGEs glycation end products, Cell Senescence, Mitophagy, hacking mTOR pathways, Activating AMPK, Manipulating adversity and caloric restriction, Nuerological inflammation and.
Like REALLY GOOD scientific information to begin to guide you in your choices and to make it worth you wile reading a book on Ageing and Longevity, I have four young children, and am very disabled life limited potentailly so i have "skin in this game" as they say, But we all do, of course, Mine is just imminent. What is , i have almost no time to write reviews, But this book made me so cross, I was moved to find that time in case I could offer the smallest bit of reality to anyone thinking about purchasing this book.
Way, way better books out there if you really want to blow your mind about what is beginning to be possible, David Sinclair's LIfespan is intelligent and honest and written by a real scientist, Plus it has actual brilliant directions you can begin to take action on right now, True Age by Dr Morgan Levine is also good, I would go so far as to say that any book, published after around, that is in this new field of longevity, is going to blow your mind and save your life a whole heap than this one.
The Lifespan is probably my favourite recommendation on where to start, Good luck. From Most Cross of Oxfordshire, Beware anyone who cares about animals, this book is full of disturbing animal experiments, Treating animals as though they were just disposable commodities is disgusting unnecessary "science", It is time the human race stopped being "me me me me" and took responsibility for their own health, In one page I could tell you to exercise and eat a wholefood Vegan diet, Afteryears on this planet I am sickened by the way laboratory animals are treated to try and "fix" human beings, A stunner If you havent got this book in your house, I dont know why Chris Evans
A startling wake up call, Writing with the vim of a Bill Bryson and the technical knowledge of a scientist, Steele gives us a chance to grasp whats at stake Independent
An exhilarating journey.
Steele is a superb guide Telegraph
A fascinating read with almost every page bursting with extraordinary facts, Read it now Mail on Sunday
Ageless is a guide to the biggest issue we all face, Ageing not cancer, not heart disease is the worlds leading cause of death and suffering, What would the world be like if we could cure it
Living disease free until the age ofis achievable within our lifetimes, In prose that is lucid and full of fascinating facts, Ageless introduces us to the cutting edge research that is paving the way for this revolution, Computational biologist Andrew Steele explains what occurs biologically as we age, as well as practical ways we can slow down the process, He reveals how understanding the scientific implications of ageing could lead to the greatest discovery in the history of civilisation one that has the potential to improve billions of lives, save trillions of dollars, and transform the human condition.
I bought this based on a recommendation I saw on Twitter, but really, this book is only for diehards, Lots of references to various research studies but the end conclusions and recommendations are simply "eat well, exercise, and don't smoke", The entire book could have been covered in a single article, Admittedly, I skipped the middle of the book because it seemed to be going nowhere, but the conclusions and recommendations spoke volumes, I was disappointed with this book, Andrew Steeles Book “Ageless” has injected youth into this reader whos, Though terminology is necessarily scientific it is very worthwhile to persevere in the reading, A reference book to refer to and enforce what youve learned, An extraordinary read. Thanks Andrew. Dr Andrew Steele is a scientist, writer and campaigner based in London, After a PhD in physics from the University of Oxford, Andrew decided that ageing was the single most important scientific challenge of our time, and switched fields to computational biology.
He worked at the Francis Crick Institute, using machine learning to decode our DNA and predict heart attacks using patients' NHS medical records, He is now a full time science writer and presenter,
Andrew has appeared on Discovery and the BBC, produces his own videos on YouTube and gives live talks ranging from lectures to science stand up at the Hammersmith Apollo.
He has also campaigned about science funding as Chair of Science is Vital and creator of Scienceogram, .
