Check Out Solutions And Other Problems Conceived By Allie Brosh Compiled As Hardbound
Brosh is the poster child for us awkward, nerdy random girls who don't have any friends because the whole concept of being ourselves around other people is alien.
And she hits that nail directly on the head with her relatable writing and crude drawings, The fact that the drawings are often quite good in some places but deliberately crude in others speaks to an underlying purpose behind the crudeness when she could just as easily draw everything perfectly.
The stories of her childhood make me laugh to the point of crying while her most recent experiences made me go to her blog and tell her how sorry I was for everything she went through.
If you haven't read her other book or been to her blog, you are missing out, She is a treasure. I missed her alot. Allie has an utterly unique, fantastical and charming way of showing the reader her world view, It's an absolute pleasure to be transported to a world where we worry about how animals perceive us, see the struggles of baby Allie, and how to calm down children petrified of dandelions.
A lot has happened to the author over the lastyears covered in the book, It's great to have her back producing work again, It's every bit as good as it used to be, I hope the next dollop of wonderfulness is less thanyears away! I remember finding the Hyperbole and A Half blog back when I was in secondary school, and I loved it immediately! I read every single post, and cried with laughter times than I can count.
I can still remember reading the blog posts about depression, and then the complete silence after that, for years and years.
Every few years Id be reminded of it by something or other, and look to see if there was anything new, but there was only silence.
And then last week, a Facebook page that Id long forgotten I had liked came back to life, and bought with it the news of this book! I pre ordered it immediately and once it arrived, I read it in one sitting.
This book is both exactly what I wanted, and not anything like what I was expecting, Id felt like I “knew” Allies life years back, with Duncan and the helper dog and the simple dog, and I was excited to both read some hilarious stories and see updates on how her life has been going! But as Allie writes, “its mayhem out there”!Her writing is, if anything, better than it was all those years ago, this book will make you laugh and chuckle and straight up lose it at parts the Richard story had me laughing so hard that I had to put the book down! But it is also a brave, strong, touching book.
It
deals with dark subjects, with tough topics, and Chaptermade me cry for a good long while.
But all the way through, while the message that “life is pointless and things suck sometimes” is typed, written and even shouted out at you over and over, there is always hope and joy and laughter still threaded through, and I see it as an optimistic book, a book that grabs the fact that “life is pointless” and uses that to show you that you can be free, you can do anything you want! So, would I reccomend this book Would I say its worth the long, long wait.
Go do yourself a favour, and read this book, because as Allie writes, “no one should have to feel like a pointless little weirdo alone”, and this book makes you feel like you arent alone.
My Rating:/It is not the Hyperbole a half you are looking for, it is not the same woman who used to blog her thoughts and feelings without ever knowing if anyone would see them.
It is better. Dealing with grief, disassociation and depression with anxiety mixed in, this is the kind of book I wish I could write.
It is significantly less 'flowy' than Hyperbole, but to the benefit of displaying an uncomfortable side of humanity that I would hope most, if not all, are familiar with.
This is not a book to escape life from, This is a book to embrace its absurdity, Thanks to the author as usual, I unfortunately related to an awful lot, I adore Allie Brosh. Her second book Solutions and Other Problems was eagerly awaited for a long time, As soon as it was possible to pre order I was there, Her first book was a hilarious account of her life predominantly with rescue pet dogs and a touching poignant description of her struggles with depression.
She is an incredibly talented and wonderful writer and I am constantly recommending her to others, Alot has happened in her life since the first book and after the personal difficulties I have faced in, reading her second book was both wonderful and heartbreaking.
It took me a while to read this as I had to keep taking breaks because it was so deeply moving and emotional to read.
However it was absolutely the right time for me to read this book, If you have suffered greatly recently or in the past I would say this is a wonderfully resonant book about how to keep going when life throws seemingly everything bad your way.
I love Allie's work. I hope this review encourages other people to love it too, THE NONEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERFor the first time in seven years Allie Brosh the creator of the immensely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half andNew York Times bestselling author returns with her new collection Solutions and Other Problems includes humorous stories from Allie Broshs childhood the adventures of her very bad animals merciless dissection of her own character flaws incisive essays on grief loneliness and powerlessness as well as reflections on the absurdity of modern life This full colour beautifully illustrated edition features all new material withthanpieces of art Solutions and Other Problems marks the return of a beloved American humourist who has the observational skills of a scientist the creativity of an artist and the wit of a comedian Bill Gates Praise for Allie Broshs Hyperbole and a Half A hilarious collection Mashable Will certainly help you should you perhaps decide to indulge in a spot of self gifting in this instance survive Christmas with yourcrazed relatives Rachel Cooke Observer Its impossible not to warm to cartoonist and blogger Allie If she doesnt get to you with her funny childhood anecdotes eating an entire birthday cake then her honest reflections on depression will GraziaTHE NO.
