on The Indie Author Guide: Self-Publishing Strategies Anyone Can Use

the many books on selfpublishing, one of the few sensible books to take both author's time and money into account.
Certainly this book is wellwritten and wellorganized, However, generally information and tips are fairly basic and unimaginative, There is a good bit of detail presented on BASIC information on the technical side of setting up an authors platform and publishing.
However, if you already have a solid competency in this area the information will not be useful,

Much of the general tips and recommendations are very similar to information that one can gather through other sources, such as blogs from publicist, marketing gurus, agents, etc.
I also was a bit peeved that some of the "easy" resources Hamilton suggestion do not have the web addressed listed in the book, but can be assessed through her online guide which, of course, requires an additional fee.

In summary, this is a good basic book, However, it's usefully will depend on the individual needs of the reader, I think it will be the best valuable for those unfamiliar with the various forms of social media, setting up a website and blog, etc.
It's a great book for getting ideas, although these days I would imagine most people are part of an online community where marketing ideas can be shared, as well as the results.
Still, if you need a starting point, this book is great for that! Very informative, She gives a very concise look into the world of publishing and I think would cause anyone to question the merit of "traditional" publishing in the current market.

Also, her writing style is accessible to anyone, not dry like you might expect from what is essentially a reference book.

Full review here: sitelink examiner. com/article/book Should be called "The Indie Author Who Doesn't Really Want To Be an Indie Author Guide", Despite periodic reassurances to the contrary, the author clearly as a bias toward feeling that indie publishing is not as good as traditional publishing, and

just KNOWS that her readers really would prefer to be picked up by a publisher.
That was very annoying.

Also annoying was the fact that I quickly found I couldn't trust her to know what she was talking about.
For instance, the section on personal facebook pages vs facebook fan pages clearly demonstrated a complete lack of knowledge on how facebook fan pages work.
She gives absolutely the wrong advice,

MUCH better books for the indie author are "Write, Publish, Repeat" by Sean Platt, and the "Indie Author Survival Guide" by Susan Kaye Quinn.
Great resource for independent and/or self publishing writers, I would have liked more info on business set up for authors like LLC, sole proprietorship, etc, But overall its a great book I refer to often, This book was extremely helpful as an aid in learning how to selfpublish a book, Extremely well written and easy to understand, which is good when you're not very smart, LOL

If you are planning to publish a book yourself, you must read this book!!!! Inspirational reading for anyone wanting to get their story out there and finding themselves locked out of the system by the gatekeepers.
Ms Hamilton offers handson technical support as well as the moral support needed to go for it, Whether you decide to do a complete DoItYourself publication or opt for an indie publisher who will take some of the load of your back, this book provides the tools and gives you a cando feeling.
This reader found the needed encouragment and courage to go for it right in this book, I'm sure I'll be referring to it again and again as I continue along the indie author trajectory, Great book that clearly goes over the details of how to create chapter files for uploading as well as other key suggestions for indie authors.

"The Indie Author Guide" gives you the skills and confidence you need to take full advantage of today's unique publishing opportunities and grow your readership yourself.
I read this book while looking for information on Admin work for writers, and thoroughly enjoyed it, The book is written in an easy to understand language, and contains a vast amount of information on not only publishing your book as an Indie Author, or along traditional routes, but also about building your own brand.
There is so much in here that would be useful to know,

I would heartily recommend this book to anyone who is considering publishing their own book, or looking for information on how to advertise their already published book.
An informative book on selfpublishing that also goes into the history of both traditional and selfpublishing, This is a book that even the least tech savvy person should be able to get value from, There is a lot to learn but its done in a way that anyone should be able to understand,

There is also a section of blank worksheets also available online and a HTML primer, The book does a good job at explaining the pros and cons of various kinds of selfpublishing and even on how to traditionally publish afterwards if that is an option one wants to consider.

I wont know exactly how useful or accurate this information is until I start doing more of the steps myself, but it seems like a good guide to getting published.
Some of the info, like Word, is outdated because this was published in,

Well written and not too textbookdry, which I really appreciated,

.. May bump up the rating higher depending on how much the guide helps me on my own journey, Decent book, although now a bit dated and aimed at the somewhat less than tech savvy, By far the best book for writers and bloggers looking into selfpublishing, Albeit the book was published in, there is still a ton of information! DNF because I had to return it due to it being a interlibrary loan.
From how far I got in, it's an insightful book, though I'd need to finish it before giving it a thorough review, so my thoughts here will change.
I picked up this book at the Borders closing sale in, and it was my first foray the world of selfpublishing, or indie publishing as April L.
Hamilton calls it. I started reading it immediately, got aboutthrough, and then lent it to a friend for what turned out to be about a year.
I just got it back this weekend and finished it up today,

If you're clueless about selfpublishing and even need an overview of traditional publishing, too, and you're not very tech savvy, this book definitely warrantsstars.
April really approaches the book as though you have very limited knowledge about publishing options, formatting your book for printondemand or ebook, and marketing by developing your brand and author platform.
As such, she provides tremendous detail about things like how to create styles in a Word document, or how to set up a professional looking Facebook page.

I found this book incredibly helpful in laying out the landscape for me at a time when I had little information.
However, in the nearly two years since I've started reading the book, I've been exposed to other resources such as the Creative Penn and The Book Designer blogs, and APE: Author, Publisher, EntrepreneurHow to Publish a Book by Guy Kawasaki and Shawn Welch, and some things have changed, so my own personal review is now leaning towardsstars.

I still plan to rely on this book for help in setting up my documents, since it does provide such specific details for formatting for galleys.
Also, I think the chapter on promotion is really helpful in comparing different tools based on price, time commitment, and level of tech savviness needed, though things have changed somewhat since the book was initially published.
I do see that there is an ebook available now, so perhaps that has updates,

If you're considering selfpublishing, this is a wonderful and detailed book, Some of the technical details are a bit outdated, but still understandable and relevant, If you also happen to be light on technical skills, or unwilling to invest a lot of time or money in learning more about the technical side of selfpublishing, this is definitely a great choice.
If you have a basic understanding of selfpublishing and you're very tech savvy, this book may be too basic for you.
This book was more informative than "Becoming An IndieAuthor" but it wasn't quite as entertaining, That being said, the information was clear and consice and April gave a lot of great ideas to help any author promote and publish their book successfully.
After reading sitelinkRachel Starr Thomson's Seventh World trilogy, I contacted her to ask some writing/selfpublishing questions.
She recommended this book to me, It is wonderful! Easy to read and very informative, April Hamilton's book is a comprehensive guide to indie publishing, covering general and specific topics, from picking the type of publishing that's best for you to how to format a document for an ebook.
It's easy to understand in fact Hamilton explains everything as if you're entirely new to the topic, Since I'm not new to the topic, I simply skimmed where she did go into details I already knew, The heftiest sections were the most beneficial: those on Author Platform, Highly recommended for anyone considering or even wondering about indie publishing, There is a lot of good information in this book, It's quite comprehensive, and worth taking a look, Simply overflowing with really well organized, detailed information, Love this book.
