introduction. I wish it had proceeded just a little further, historically, than it did, but I enjoyed it nevertheless, The History of Astronomy
A Very Short Introduction
Michael Hoskin

An OK introduction, though it is about the history of Astronomy I think it lacked some details and discoveries of the ancient times.
From Babylon, Egypt, Greece, Islamic World, and The Western World till the earlyth century it covers a lot in a fastpaced and sometimes with a bit of jumping around.

Not bad but it needed more to be a proper introduction to the history of astronomy! Chapter: The sky in prehistory
Chapter: Astronomy in antiquity
Chapter: Astronomy in the Middle Ages
Chapter: Astronomy transformed
Chapter: Astronomy in the age of Newton
Chapter: Exploring the universe of sitelinkBreve historia de la astronomía

Un libro genial, fácil de leer, muy explicativo y gráfico, More physics rather than history, but an insightful read nonetheless, The history of astronomy : a very short introduction Very Short Introductions, Michael Hoskin

From the Publisher: This is a fascinating introduction to the history of Western astronomy, from prehistoric times to the origins of astrophysics in the midnineteenth century.

Historical records are first found in Babylon and Egypt, and after two millennia the arithmetical astronomy of the Babylonians merged with the Greek geometrical approach to culminate in the Almagest of Ptolemy.

This legacy was transmitted to the Latin West via Islam, and led to Copernicus's claim that the Earth is in motion.

In justifying this Kepler converted astronomy into a branch of dynamics, leading to Newton's universal law of gravity.

The book concludes with eighteenth and nineteenthcentury applications of Newton's law, and the first explorations of the universe of.

Interesting read Hoskin's review of the History of Astronomy is informative and fairly easy to read, He introduces all of the major players of astronomy Newton, Galileo, Kepler, etc, . . while examining humankind's interest in the since the beginining of written history, It get's a little bit technical or mathy at times, but for the most part it's an easy and interesting read for the layman astronomer.
Things to remember:

Astronomers were not studying the objects in the sky, they were studying the light that they could see.
Astronomy ceased to exist as such when mathematics and physics came into play to study light, The ancient, classic, middle age, renaissance, and modern astronomers used ingenious methods to learn as much as they could about the planets, wanderers, starts, stable ones, asteroids, and comets.
It was a good listen,
Again, great information but very dryly written, Who knew the history of astronomy ended in the midth century

And just as the story was getting good How did our knowledge of the and heavens advance from the Greeks through to the present day.
A very Western view of astronomy, this is nonetheless a very interesting overview of the history of the subject, last until the earlyth centruy when large parts of astronomy became astrophysics.

/chulísimo Delivers on what you would expect: an easilyreadable very short introduction to the history astronomy I love this series by Oxford University Press and feel they are a great introduction to a continuing liberal education.
I wanted to start this one because it will be a refresher, and more up to date than a book I read as ayear old: A Short History of Astronomy: From Earliest Times Through the Nineteenth Century, by Arthur Berry by Dover originally published in! I thought this was really pretty good.
Its not very detailed as one would imagine from the title, Its hard to say whether this would be a good place to start for a beginner, It might be. At the very least, it would prompt further questioning, I thought the description of precession could have been better, but his discussion of spectroscopy was quite good,

I really enjoyed the addition of the Isalmic influence on astronomy during the Middle Ages, Again, its not super detailed but pretty interesting nonetheless, He doesnt go beyond theth century in this little history, And he tends to jump around a bit between the later centuries, taking it in more of a conceptual progression rather than a narrative progression if that even makes sense.
