second Kay Clifford book and I loved this one,
A sweet story of an innocent young lady who in the hopes of finding herself, takes a job in Majorca as a cook for a family.
It isnt until she arrives that she realizes that she would be cooking for a single man, A very attractive, sexy, single man who is the author of very erotic books,
Their relationship starts of on the wrong foot with a burnt meal and lots of dislike on both sides, But it is soon obvious that there is chemistry between them,
I love the constant banter between the h and H, They both try so hard to avoid the sparks flying between them, but its useless,
The rest of the cast of characters is made up by a famous actress as the OW, a wimpy little lawyer as the wanna be OM and the
Hs brother and his wife.
They all kept the story interesting without too much drama,
I love the ending, The H completely won me over with his grand gesture, It was wonderfully romanticstars.
This is the very second book I've borrowed from Open Library and while it's nice getting to read it for free, I dislike having to read it according to someone else's schedule.
It feels too much like doing homework, Lol.
Anyway, I'm rushing to do this review before I forget all the important stuff especially everything that annoyed me about this storyline,
I had major problems with the hero, Jake not because he's a manwhore even though he is , since that's no biggie in vintage HPlandia, It's actually because of how he forced himself to pander to the OW, just because she's a famous actress and he needed her in his upcoming movie,
Maybe I'm too judgemental, but I think an alpha male H should be stronger and should definitely not have his balls bound and controlled by the whims of a fickle former lover aka the actress OW, Celia.
Jake, the H, is a bestselling author of Harold Robbins' type of novels: plenty of gratuitous sex, scandal, drama and OTT MC's, He reminded me immediately of the pretty blonde stud H from sitelinkThe Duke Wore Jeans,
There are lots of hot blonde H's I've loved, but Jake and the guy from sitelinkThe Duke Wore Jeans weren't my type, They're both charming, extremely handsome and sexy but they're also very uncaring of how their attitude hurts their heroines,
The heroine, Emma, is a sweet, virginal, year old new Cordon Bleu graduate who's been sheltered by over protective grandparents, She accepts the job to be the H's chef at his mansion villa on Majorca, to gain some independence and to escape from the stifling attentions of the OM named Peter.
Contrary to the title of the book, the MC's never actually engage in an affair because Emma doesn't believe in premarital sex, At first, the H pushes her away, warning her that he's not the marrying type because women bore him easily, He's quite proud of his love 'em and leave 'em reputation too,
Most of the novel revolves around the cat and mouse game played by these MC's, One minute she wants him, then she doesn't, then she's blurting out she loves him, then she retracts it after he's not receptive to her emotional avowals and then she has to take a back seat while he acts like an adoring sycophant around Celia.
That's the part that aggravated me, I even wanted to believe that he didn't have sex with the OW because he'd said before Celia arrived at the villa , that he would merely be buttering up the latter just to make her sign the contract.
But, later on in the novel, there's a very revealing conversation between the MC's, which revealed that he might have actually slept with the OW on the first night she'd arrived:
"Or do you expect me to believe that your visits to Celia's bedroom were purely platonic"
"They were, after the first night.
"
Frankly, that soured my mood ! I felt that the H had merely acted like some sort of gigolo, He had implied that it wasn't a big deal and that sucking up to the OW was just business, What's worse is that the OW would be in his life for the entire duration of the filming !
Anyway, the storyline is complicated by the unexpected arrival of the boring OM, Peter.
It added some drama, because the H suddenly stopped taking the heroine for granted because his new competition made him jealous,
Emma irritated me a little because of her juvenile attitude and her refusal to publicly announce her engagement to the H, after he finally proposed and told her he loved her.
This is set in the pre internet era, yet she delays the announcement because she has to phone her grandparents first,
This created some unnecessary angst that was anti climatic ! They're both in love and want to get married, yet this decision left them open to the usual type of OW troublemaking.
The heroine saw Celia, silhouetted in the dark, thanking a guy for some hot sex and immediately assumed it was the H,
The dumb H didn't deny it because he thought it was his married brother who'd slept with Celia and didn't want to reveal the truth and ruin David's marriage.
Of course, the heroine dumped him, returned to England and spent a year separated from Jake,
The H did make a grand gesture, a whole year after and he told her that the OW had actually had sex with the OM Peter, rather than with his brother, David.
But, he never addressed the issue of all the pretty women he'd been photographed with, in the tabloids, during their separation, He claimed that the heroine was the only one for him, but my rose tinted contact lenses aren't rosy enough for me to believe that he was celibate.
I guess my skepticism is perhaps linked to the fact that I don't really trust this author's heroes much, I think the H will be faithful in the future, but he's such a spoilt and fickle character, that I am unwilling to put my head on a block and swear that he won't at least flirt a lot with beautiful women.
Safety: I think the H had sex with the OW once, based on the quotation above, The heroine shared kisses and embraces with the OM, The heroine was celibate during their one year separation but I'm not sure about the H, He'd been in far too many tabloid articles with other women, I guess it's up to each reader to decide, And, the MC's don't have sex in the story, Cover reminds me of hades the goat from one of the Rachel Van Dyker books, This book is so good, interesting characters and a well written plot with steamy romance "SEX IS ONLY A VERY ENJOYABLE GAME TO ME, "
The words were more than a wishful boast from a modern Lothario they described the lifestyle Jake Sanders practiced,
Combine this devastating man, a handsome blond Adonis, with the sunshine of romantic Majorca, and the stage is set for heartache, That is, if you happen to believe in shared love and marriage, And Emma Porter did.
Could she convince herself that a short affair with Jake was better than no Jake at all,
