Great pics and insiders story, Wonderful book. I recieved a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review,

I really, really enjoyed this, It sucked me in from the very beginning with rich descriptions and fantastic characters,

I loved reading from Ofelia's pov, It was interesting to see her take on everything that happened, . . Interspersed with pov's from the adults around her and the creatures from the Underworld,

I think it stayed in line with the film really well and I really enjoyed the film,

I'd love to read more by these authors I think they could do some amazing work
I am a big fan of both fairy tales in the original, dark sense and Guillermo del Toro's work.
So when I found out that there was a book detailing how  sitelinkPan's Labyrinth El laberinto del Fauno was made, I immediately scooped it up and dived in.
Del Toro is a master at creating new fairy tales set in modern or early modern times and I appreciate his knowledge of how fairy tales are not the molded pounds of sugar that we see today.
They are meant to be dark, horrid, and impart a dire warning while simultaneously offering hope if that warning is heeded, Del Toro gets that on such an intimate and deep level,

The book itself offers lush details into the creation of the movie with photographs, sketches, movie stills, and CG images from the notebooks and reference books of del Toro and his crew throughout the development of Pan's Labyrinth.
The writing is done by Nick Nunziata and Mark Cotta Vaz, but del Toro and several of his close friends/crew discuss the processes, trials, and work that went into making the movie.

I absolutely love the little inserts that the book has, which makes it feel as if the book you are holding in your hands is a real notebook from the director himself, but I wish they were added with a little more attention and care.

In some places, the attachment works fine, The added layer gives the content and the book as a whole more depth, I can't express enough how much I liked these added little treasures!

In other places, however, the placement interferes with the writing and doesn't stay out of the way when you are reading.
This is my biggest complaint, but one that I can overlook,

You really get a feel for the moviemaking process without feeling out of the loop if you're not that familiar with it.
I enjoyed the depth to which the authors delved in bringing del Toro's process, emotions, and thoughts on the movie and story to the forefront.
This isn't just a book with pretty pictures, but another layer of immersion for those that have fallen in love with the story.
If you have not watched sitelinkPan's Labyrinth El laberinto del Fauno, I highly suggest it, You will think you've fallen into a living storybook, I love coffee table books and love Pan's Labyrinth, so this was probably never not going to be a great experience for me.
This book is loaded with facts about the creation of the film as well as beautiful artwork, I really knew nothing about the production aspect of this movie and think that this book will have a real, positive impact on my experience of the film next time I watch it.
Would recommend for hardcore fans as myself of Pan's Labyrinth,

I usually prefer Kindle over physical books, but books as this one remind me that physical books can offer such beauty that cannot be found yet in their digital counterpart.

It's a very beautiful book, and it does offer some insights over both the production and the story of Pan's Labyrinth.
SPOILERS OF THE MOVIE AHEAD One of the fun facts that blew my mind was that the Faun gets younger progressively as the movie flows, a detail I hadn't noticed even though I've seen the movie many times.
Other fun fact is that at the end of the movie, the Faun is once again with the fairies, revealing that the Faun and the Pale Man were the same character, and that "eating" the fairies was just a trick to impress Ofelia.

Definitely would recommend, as it offers a greater understanding of one of the best movies in film history, This is the novelisation of thefilm by Guillermo del Toro and cowritten forby Inkeart novelist Cornelia Funke, I've had a look around the internet for why we suddenly have a written adaption and can't really find anything beyond: because she wanted to.
Odd but I did enjoy reading the story, I vaguely remember starting to watch the film, being a bit weirded out and giving up, Reading this makes me want to give the film another go,

It's beautifully described, very haunting in some places and very easy to devour all in one go, It's much darker than the children's stories we get now and probably more evocative of the fairy tales as they were originally written hundreds of years ago.
I enjoyed being a little bit creeped out by some of the characters like the Pale Man and the violence of the Capitan.

I'm intrigued to see the final published work as the illustrations looked great on kindle netgalley PDF but I'd like to see if they will be coloured.
If not I still imagine they will be fantastic in print as they looked amazing from what I could tell, I actually wish there were more of them, I think they enhanced the story a great deal,

Overall not sure why we have it but I'm glad we do,   Such a visually pleasing book for every fan Visuell und inhaltlich ein wirklich tolles Buch zum Film, Großartig! I really loved this book! I knew I was going to from the beginning though, Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite directors of all time and Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies of all time.
I have the special edition DVD of the film and I'm glad I got this book for Christmas, One of the best presents ever!

It was interesting to learn about his childhood, his struggles with the movie, his inspirations, the way he works and how he pushes people to get the results he wants/needs.
He's amazing and I would love to work with him some day, He seems very talented, determined, focused, and hard working, You could tell Pan's Labyrinth was a very personal movie for him by the way he talks about it in the book and because of all the work he put towards that movie.
And it shows! The movie was spectacular and emotional, I knew he was very inspired when making it,

I really love this book so much, I've been working pretty hard lately and my heart had been hurting this week because of not getting enough sleep, I was actually able to finish this book tonight because I didn't have to be on set, This book reminded me why I'm putting myself through this, Why my pain is worth it right now, I want to make a career in film and completely transition into just working in film for a living, I want to be able to make movies like Guillermo does, I want to make something like Pan's Labyrinth, Because like Guillermo, I want to express myself through films, And I hope to touch people just like his film has touched me,

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in films, fantasy, Guillermo, and what goes into making a movie.
''Many, many years ago in a sad, faraway land, there was an enormous mountain made of rough, black stone, At sunset, on top of that mountain, a magic rose blossomed every night that made whoever plucked it immortal, But no one dared go near it because its thorns were full of poison, Men talked amongst themselves about their fear of death, and pain, but never about the promise of eternal life, And every day, the rose wilted, unable to bequeath its gift to anyone, . . forgotten and lost at the top of that cold, dark mountain, forever alone, until the end of time, ''

In the fascist Spain of, the bookish young stepdaughter of a sadistic army officer escapes into an eerie but captivating fantasy world.

Ivana Baquero: Ofelia

Sergi López: Captain Vidal

A review of story and film, . .years ago onDecember:

Guillermo Del Toro's El laberinto del fauno, translating as Pan's Labyrinth or The labyrinth of the faun, has been called a fairy tale, but it is one with dark, exotic colours, a seething reality of warmth, and a tragic adult fairy tale reminiscent to the tones entwined, for example, in The Brother's Grimm stories.

Historical, realistic merging with the layers and realms that equal fantasy, Guillermo Del Toro effortlessly combines the two Worlds Essentially one World thus joined,

It owes a debt to the Latin genre concerning magical realism, as it reflects the grim fantasies revolving around a young child caught in the middle of a brutal conflict and her desperate longing for a world without torment and anguish.
Set in Spain after Franco had emerged victorious in the Spanish Civil War, Nationalist troops and die hard resistance fighters continue the struggle in the Spanish countryside.

As the film opens, Carmen Ariadna Gil and her daughter Ofelia, brilliantly performed by Ivana Baquero, are travelling to join Carmen's new husband, Falangist Captain Vidal Sergei Lopez in his military headquarters.

The film shifts seamlessly between fantasy sequences and the armed conflict, Captain Vidal is depicted as a soldier who takes pleasure in killing, In one scene, he sadistically beats a peasant to death with a bottle, suspecting him of being a rebel, However, his actions, brutality and cruelty is not limited merely to rebels, When Carmen becomes sick during her difficult pregnancy, the girl hears her stepfather tell the doctor that if it comes to a choice between saving the mother or saving the baby, he wants him to save the baby.

Nationalist men, fascist men deal strength through lacking in empathy and essentially weakness is nurturing compassion for those considered weak, Captain Vidal is merely the equation of a unified sense of patriotism mixed with hatred for the World which is to be this perfect World.
He is a product of Franco, A product of malicious certainty which wishes to eradicate anything that opposes the regime,
Amidst all this darkness, Ofelia develops a warm relationship with the housekeeper, Mercedes Maribel Verdu, whom she later discovers sneaks out at night to bring messages, food, and medical supplies to the rebels.
The Captain is merciless when he discovers Mercedes' treason as well as that of Dr, Ferreiro Alex Angulo whom later refuses to obey Vidal's orders,

As the world around her grows darker and her mother becomes sicker, Ofelia further retreats into her dream world, Soon she must make the most difficult choice any person can be asked to make,
Pan's Labyrinth is a strong and layered film but it is also emotional, tragic and dramatically charged while being powerfully subjective.

Del Toro's work, however, is not confined merely to metaphysics or spirituality,
Essentially his story is a personal film about memory, life and dreams, As both Ofelia and Vidal remember their fathers, Guillermo Del Toro wants the world to remember the sadistic nature of the Franco regime, the courage of those who stood up against its brutality, and the innocence his country lost forever.

Overall, Pan's Labyrinth wonOscars for it's beauty and arty majestic approach, Art direction, cinematography and make up we're the respective awards yet I feel it is much more than merely a beautiful style over substance venture.
This is a beautiful, effect laden piece, yes, but it is also deep, meaningful and reflective of ideals and philosophical discussion regarding life and death.
In that respect, Pan's Labyrinth achieves eternal, loving adoration from audiences and film lovers, A timeless classic for years to come,

''A long time ago, in the underground realm, where there are no lies or pain, there lived a Princess who dreamed of the human world.
She dreamed of blue skies, soft breeze, and sunshine, ''
