I am a huge fan of the Sons of Anarchy television series so finding a novel focused on a motorcycle club was exciting for me.
I really like the way B, D. Roca builds the threat level in Broken Sun, I read the first half of the story on the edge of my seat, concerned not just for the safety of Morgan and Luc as individuals, but also for their relationship.
From the beginning of Broken Sun, Roca establishes that Luc is in a precarious situation because he is protecting his sister, who has run away from her Legion member boyfriend.
This results in his beating, which could have been much worse if Morgan had not stepped in, Luc then further compromises his safety by asking to leave the Legion, Roca communicates the air of tension in the clubhouse when Luc asks his question and the reply he gets compounds the difficulty of the position he is putting himself in:

A City to City Novel

James Morgan: outlaw in a ruthless biker club, the Bastard Legion, Willing to do whatever he must to claw his way to the top of the clubs hierarchy,

Two things stand in the way of his ambitions: his heroinaddicted brother and his bisexuality, In Morgans world, his attraction to men is a death sentence, and he has no desire to pursue it until he tangles with Luc Sinclair,

Luc Sinclair: fellow Bastard Legion biker, Tattoo artist. Rebel who wants out of a club hes grown to despise,

Luc has a sister hes protecting from a Legion exboyfriend, Saving her makes him a target, Morgan intervenes, and all bets are off, The sex is as fierce and passionate as it is dangerous, But when Morgans junkie brother learns of the relationship, he sees a way to advance in the Legion and take out a brother he hates, Their three worlds collideone is left for dead, another fighting for life, and the bond between them broken,

In a dark and violent world where its every man for himself, finding their way back to each other and the only truth theyve ever found will be a long, hard fight.

Harsh and gritty, but oh so good This was an excellent read for me, It's the type of novel I really get into, Dark, violent, emotional on all levels and filled with two very dynamic MC's: Morgan and Luc, Full review at :

James Morgan is a ruthless biker with the goal to go far in the hierarchy of his club, the Legion.

Luc Sinclair is a member of the Legion too, but he wants to get out, and he needs to find a way to leave the club and stay alive.

When Morgan and Luc start to see each other, they know that they risk their lives, Being Gay in a Biker Club is like having a death wish, Theyre cautious, until things go wrong and life and death get in their way,
Im a huge fan of bikers books and Sons of Anarchy Jax Teller forever, This book was for me, I had to read it because you know, gay biker and all, I was a little bit disappointed,

The writing is good, the author developed the characters very well, Luc and Morgan are two beautiful men and souls, They are passionate with each other but also very complex, Theyre also very hot.

The story and the plot were good, but too long, way too long, Theres barely no action, clearly here, the author angled the book on the characters psyche more than of the biker life style and its not a bad thing but the story stretched too much, things were going around in circles, sometimes I lost the tread of my reading.

Its too bad, because, really, the author has a very good potential, The writing is good and well built without the too long parts, Its not because the book wasnt for me that it doesnt deserve a try, Im sure youll love Morgan and Luc and try a ride with them,

For me itsOptimuMMs for them,

Life in any biker club isn't as glamorous as some seem to think it is, People have seen Sons of Anarchy and think it's just entertainment, It's supposed to be all fun and games and making money, But they don't realize until it's too late that life in the club is hard and violent and often grizzly, This book, this series, has shown a lot of that impact, It was surprisingly realistic and really good,

Being in the Legion motorcycle club is all Morgan has really ever known, There are strict rules about certain things and certain things that if they come up, will get you killed, Being

gay is a definite one, So Morgan has buried that part of his bisexuality and went on with life, Until a random night in a bar, when he runs into fellow clubber Luc, The looks between them alone would have gotten them killed, but they push it further as Luc has lusted over Morgan since he's laid eyes on him.
And Morgan is drawn to Luc like a moth to a flame, They can't resist each other and things blossom quickly, But they are found out by Morgan's brother and in an attempt to blackmail Morgan, Luc is beaten almost to death and Morgan has to toe the line.
Things quickly change. Morgan knows he has to get Luc out of the club like he been trying to do and now, He does but at a cost that breaks the bond and puts him in over his head, And hurts his family. Now he has a choice to make and it may be too late to make things right,

When I first read Happy Birthday, which is book, I hated Morgan with such a passion, He hurt Nick so bad, But stupid me, when I started this book, I didn't put it together that this Morgan was the one that did all that damage, I know. I'm an idiot. But when I did put it together, I had a hard time at first, To see this softer side of Morgan, To see that he loved someone and that it was a man, It pulled at me. The more I read, though, the more I couldn't help but feel sorry for him, Yes, he made some bad decisions, Very bad. But deep down he was doing what he thought best to protect what he loved, It just backfired. More people than he thought knew what was going on and they weren't going to let it go, He knew he had to save Luc and it shattered him in a bad way, And even though he became someone almost evil, you can't help but feel his brokenness, The pull of everything getting to him and pulling him under, Drowning him with no way out, The one thing I hated more than anything, though, was how long it took for Morgan to get back to Luc, And if the fact it wasn't for a job for the Legion, he wouldn't have at all, But when you feel you aren't worthy or deserving of such beauty, it's understandable,

Doing things we have to do to protect others isn't always the best, Especially when it ends up hurting you or them, We have to remember sometimes there is another way, and if there isn't, we have to find a way to make it work and move on,

This was one hell of a book, And series. It has some harsh truths and violence in both books, But in order to be accurate, there has to be, I recommend them. Very very good.

sitelink com Thisbook series and starts off with the short story, Happy Birthday which actually takes place after this book which is novel length but it makes sense once you start reading.
So yes, read Happy Birthday first, then Broken Sun,

Spoiler: I wish I had realized that the Uncle in Happy Birthday is the MC in Broken Sun, it actually would have made more sense when I started thend book, even though he's pretty despicable, you learn why and, of course, he redeems! I spent too much time confused/guessing if it was and not focusing on the story.
Easy enough to put together since he mentions his nephews name, Nick, right away, Hhmm . This was a mixed bag,

The other book in this series was one of my favorite reads last year and I was really excited to get my hands on this one.
The first half or so was fantastic and I couldn't put it down, The chemistry between the two guys jumped off the page, The situation they're in is super tough and you feel like it's them against the rest of the world, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen and if they were going to make it out alive and together.

The magic started to wane for me though as the story hit it's peak, The blurb says "the bond between them broken" but I guess I underestimated what that was going to mean to the story, There is a huge gap where they are not together and that's just not a story twist I like, If an author puts the MC's through hell I want to see them come through it together, These two did eventually find their way back together and the book ends in a HEA but by that time all the magic was gone for me.
I had a hard time buying their reunion and all the events that happened from that point on, It was aboutof the book so it was a big chunk for me to be disheartened by,

It wasn't until almost the end of this book that I realized how these characters tied in to the characters from the first book, That being said, this can be read just fine as a standalone, I think this author is very good and I hope that more people will try her/his books, The reason I didn't rate this higher was due to my dislike of the way the plot went but I don't think that's reflective of the author's talent.
A lot of readers may have no problem with it,

Id never heard of the author but I enjoy “biker” stories and have found few that I like in MM, This was an absolute winner! Its set in Australia, but I guess some aspects of motorcycle clubs are universal, Morgan, at first, appears to be the cliché biker dude, but theres much more to him, not including the bisexuality hes kept locked in the closet his whole life.
When he rescues Luc from a beating, its sets the stage for their doomed love affair, Told in three parts, the first two segments are set in the past, revolving around efforts by both men to resolve their family issues and leave the club behind.
Part three is set in the present, aroundyears after partsamp, I was also quite pleased by alternating POVs, combined with an emotional and compelling plot,
The writing was excellent, the pacing quite good with a great buildup of tension that kept my attention riveted, This was one that I couldnt stop reading until it was finished atA, M. There were a few things Id wish were done differently, mostly in part three, It didnt flow quite as well and events moved a little too quickly, in my view, There werent a ton of sex scenes, and all were integral to the storyline, with a decent sizzle factor, Im definitely going back to read the first novella, involving Morgans nephew, I think it will fill in some of the intervening years of Morgans absence from Luc, The story is gritty, rather dark in places, with some violence thats not too graphic, except one disturbing murder scene, Im giving this one a strong recommendation,

An ARC was provided by the author or publisher at no charge and I have chosen to publish a fair and honest review on Hearts On Fire s blog.
