Snag Guardians Of The Galaxy: The Power Of Starhawk Engineered By Steve Gerber Conveyed As Interactive EBook
shocked Marvel let them killkids
I gave it a star for the inclusion of the Topographical Man alone, Defeated by, I guess, Vague, but funny to think about.
This was some great scifi fun, but don't go into this expecting to get to know the Guardians of the Galaxy from the movies, This is the OG team, with some very episodic OG team adventures, The majority of this particular volume seemed to center around Starhawk though, a character I have mixed feelings about, particularly after reading this one, A rather unexpectedly dark twist to Starhawk's story though, and the repercussions aren't included within this volume,
Good stories though, I particularly like Nikki and her role on the team,
Steve Gerber was best when he stuck to quirky parody, This attempt at quirky space adventure has moments, but few, It was the best of times, it was the worst of times it was a thousand years from now, where the Guardians of the Galaxy help humanity rebuild after waves of alien invasions! But while Earth's in turmoil, threats rise from two other worlds: one of them living, the other gone mad! See the future's past today! Featuring the introduction of Nikki and the origin of Starhawk! Gueststarring the Silver Surfer! Collects Marvel Presents.
Good oldfashioned scifi fun. As only Marvel and Steve Gerber could do it in the seventies, A special bonus is the Future History of the Earth, Remember the bionics wars of the nineties Me neither, I guess it was removed from my memory by TPTB, Won't help you understand the new movie, but loads of fun, Take it from One who knows./Stars.
, not the characters from the movie and saw writer Steve Gerber give them greater exposure as guest in MARVEL TWOINONE and DEFENDERS, Now, in this second volume, we finally see the team shine in its first series, originally published inas MARVEL PRESENTS sThe first two issues featured a character named Bloodstone, who presumably did not connect sufficiently with the readership.
. Steve Gerber, who seemed to have some affection for these characters, writes six of the ten issues, Roger Stern writes three full issues, two of which conclude a storyline that Gerber began, A tenth issue is really a reprint of SILVER SURFERwith a framing sequence by Roger Stern and artist Al Milgrom,
The series, set in the thirtyfirst century, is essentially “Star Trek mixed with super heroes,” but with Gerber at the helm, you know that youre in for a trippy ride, with much weirdness and some occasional social satire.
Among other events, the Guardians land on a planet that resembless New York City, tackle a strange cosmic entity thats destroying star systems and learn the origin of Starhawk, a being who shares his body with a woman named Aleta yes, really! and is forced to switch places with her upon occasion.
Unfortunately, there are a couple moments that venture into borderline creepy territory, Gerber introduces Nikki, the Guardians first female member, He establishes that Nikki is only eighteen, so its a little unsettling when Vance Astro, the “thousand year old man” seems particularly attracted to her, Then, theres the weird relationship between Starhawk and Aleta, The two are both adopted siblings AND husband and wife! Theyre not biologically related mind you, but stillwhy did Gerber have to make them both That relationship becomes even stranger when Gerber establishes that the two have somehow spawned children despite the fact that theyve been trapped in the same body since a young, childless age Neither Gerber nor Stern explains how that happened.
. Of course, around this same time, Gerber was also making us wonder whether there was any bestiality between Howard the Duck and Beverly Switzler, and now, Im starting to wonder what sort of sexual thoughts went through the mans head.
Maybe its best that I dont know, and since Gerber died in, hes not around to answer the question anyway,
With the exception of the Silver Surfer reprint, Al Milgrom pencils the entire series, Im not a fan of his art, to be honest, His figures often seem a bit squat and splotchy to me, That said, a good inker can make a big difference, This volume features several different inkers with several different styles, but Terry Austin and Bob Wiacek who inks the last three issues are standouts and make Milgrom look pretty good.
I did not, however, care for Milgroms pencils when they were inked by Pablo Marcos, Howard Chaykin or Milgrom himself, Your mileage may vary.
I enjoyed this volume, but as you can probably tell, its the patented Gerber weirdness that, for me, elevated this beyond just space opera and super heroes yes even with the borderline creepy bits.
. If you like Gerber, then youll probably like this volume, If you dont, then its probably best that you stay away,
Collecting Marvel Presents, this volume offers the first story with Guardians of the Galaxy on their own their previous appearances having been as guest in other heroes titles, e.
g. joining forces with the Thing and Captain America in TwoinOne and with the Defenders in their title, It is written by Steve Gerber, with a couple of issues by Roger Stern and part of an issue being snipped from a Silver Surfer issue by Stan Lee, and drawn by Al Milgrom.
It is the story of how the Guardians, i, e.
